James Cameron reflected on being “just a punk” when he directed The Terminator and how, looking back now, he knows it wasn’t perfect.
The Oscar-winning director spoke to Empire magazine ahead of the classic sci-fi film’s 40th anniversary next month and noted he considers the project his first, despite technically getting his first director credit on Piranha II.
“I was just a punk starting out when I directed The Terminator. I think I was 29 at the time, and it was my first directing gig,” he told the publication. “Terminator was my first film, and it’s near and dear for that reason.”
Despite it having a special place in his heart, the Titanic helmer admitted he doesn’t think of it as “some Holy Grail.” He added, “I look at it now, and there are parts of it that are pretty cringeworthy and parts of it that are like,...

After years of waiting for their franchise to get back on-track, "Terminator" fans finally have a decent on-screen installment in the long-suffering saga. After several studios tried and failed to right the "Terminator" ship, a savior arrived in the unlikely form of Netflix. The streamer's new "Terminator Zero" anime show is a gorgeous and gruesome eight-episode series that represents showrunner/EP/writer Mattson Tomlin's attempt to inject a bit of horror back into the franchise.
It's an element of the original two movies that has been conspicuously absent from subsequent entries. As the "Terminator" films went on, they increasingly leaned into action blockbuster territory, jettisoning the slasher vibe creator James Cameron established with his 1984 original film, as well as the ambient sense of doom from Cameron's 1991 sequel "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." Thankfully, much of that is back in "Zero," which as /Film's Bj Colangelo writes in her review, features...

"What's your plan?" "I'm going to blow the F his brains out! Capelight Pictures has revealed a full trailer for a hilarious B-movie horror creation called Rippy, formerly known as The Red. It's a kooky Australian comedy horror about a violent, killer kangaroo. When locals in a country town start being killed by a zombie kangaroo, the local sheriff must face her past and work with her eccentric uncle to defeat the beast before it kills everyone. The filmmakers explain: "It explores the conflict between obligation and freedom of choice, the grief of losing a loved one and the lies we tell ourselves, and each other, to protect the memories of those that have passed. It is also about a 7 foot tall undead kangaroo, and the start of the apocalypse. "Alien 3" is one of the more controversial "Alien" movies. For one thing, the development of the project went through fits and starts. For another, David Fincher, who made his feature directorial debut on the sequel, had notorious behind-the-scenes problems and has more or less disowned the movie entirely. And then there's the fact that the film is unapologetically bleak, including an opening that kills off fan-favorite characters like space Marine Hicks and precocious child Newt. Just to seal the deal, the movie then ends by killing off Sigourney Weaver's Ripley, who was the franchise's main character.
All that said, the film still has its fans. But even when you take into account the fact that "Alien 3" has its supporters, it's not unfair to say the film is flawed and not held in as high regard as Ridley Scott's original "Alien" or James Cameron's blockbuster sequel "Aliens.

Sigourney Weaver was the star of the Alien franchise for four movies straight. She played heroine Ellen Ripley in Ridley Scott’s Alien, James Cameron’s Aliens, and David Fincher’s Alien 3… and even though Ripley didn’t make it out of Alien 3 alive, Weaver still returned to play a clone of the character in Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Alien: Resurrection. 27 years have gone by since the last time Weaver starred in an Alien movie, and the franchise has continued without her through the crossover movies Alien vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, the prequels Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, the “mid-quel” (it slots in between the events of Alien and Aliens) Alien: Romulus, and the upcoming TV series Alien: Earth. But during a recent interview with Deadline, Weaver confirmed that she would “consider” returning to the role of Ripley if the offer came up.

Exclusive Interview: Paugh Shadow (The Omicron Killer) When did you first decide you wanted to venture into the filmmaking industry and is it all you dreamt it would be? After 9/11 and I was walking the streets of Manhattan because I lost my job at the World Trade Center, I saw people filming a movie. I asked what they were doing and asked if I could be apart. The rest is history. I just kept finding projects and progressed from there. Absolutely not what I dreamt it would be. It is definitely harder than one imagines. You have worked as an actor and a voice actor which one do you have more of a passion for and what is the vocal challenges between the roles? I have an equal passion for both. I have just had more opportunities with just acting as oppose to voice acting. The vocal challenges with acting...

James Cameron Films ranked by Box Office Gross. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
James Cameron is the undisputed king of the box office, as three of the four highest-grossing films in Hollywood history belong to the director. Whether it’s romance, action, or sci-fi genre, the acclaimed filmmaker has always hit the bullseye, with his work resonating well with the audience.
Cameron has directed nine films so far, starting with Piranha II: The Spawning in 1982. However, the director has largely disowned his debut film, since he was replaced from it within two weeks of production, and the movie’s box office collection remains unavailable. Here are the rest of James Cameron’s eight films, ranked on the basis of their worldwide gross.

Tiger Style Media is partnering with Paramount‘s Republic Pictures for old-school-style martial arts double feature releases. The first two of the four films released this month are Art of Eight Limbs and The Lockdown. Art of Eight Limbs stars Ludi Lin, who plays Liu Kang in 2021’s Mortal Kombat and the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2. The trailer will likely give viewers some déjà vu as the plot of infiltrating a martial arts tournament led by a criminal comes straight from Bruce Lee’s famous film Enter the Dragon. However, mix it in with some Muay Thai action and it’s a cocktail for some martial arts mayhem.
The official synopsis reads,
“In this action-packed thriller from a producer of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Ludi Lin stars as a CIA data analyst and part-time kickboxer. Sent on a mission to Myanmar, he must infiltrate a martial arts tournament...

"You're in a death factory. Unless you figure out how to survive... you won't." Even that one line is awful. Republic Pictures via Paramount has revealed an official trailer for The Lockdown, a martial arts action thriller from filmmaker Ryan C Jaeger making his feature directorial debut. Another of these direct-to-video dumps, an exceptionally generic action movie from Myanmar made by the same producers that also made Art of Eight Limbs. Looks like they made two films in a row in Myanmar and Thailand and this is the second one. Siblings Charlie and Jack are trapped in Myanmar's toughest prison and accused of a crime they didn't commit. Forced into televised fights against other inmates, they must work together and fight hard for their freedom. Starring Caity Lotz, Leo Howard, Michael Biehn, Hon Ping Tang, Jennifer Blanc-Biehn, and Kelly B. Jones, and many others. This film looks only slightly better than Art of Eight Limbs,...

Let’s face it – Alien movies are not created equal. In my Alien: Romulus review, I noted that there have really only ever been two flawless films in the franchise, with the rest all having moments of genius (well – most of them) but none measuring up to the first two movies in the saga. All of this makes Alien movie rankings quite controversial, as it’s a divisive topic. So, how does our Alien movies ranked list shape up? Let’s dive right in, shall we?
Alien Vs Predator: Requiem (2007)
I honestly couldn’t believe Fox had the gall to release this as a legit entry into the franchise in 2007. At the time, the studio had a bad reputation for putting out half-baked and cheap genre fare (made even more frustrating by how many were based on top-notch properties). This was the nadir of both the Alien and Predator franchises.

As far as genre films go, Westerns are pretty prolific. There are more cinematic stories about the "Old West" than you can shake a stick at, and that means determining which one is the greatest of all time is a pretty daunting task. For some, that "greatest of all time" designation goes to the 1993 movie "Tombstone," which tells the story of Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) and Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer) as they face off with the villainous cowboys who threaten the town of Tombstone, Arizona. That's an honor that might not sit right with folks who are big fans of the Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone or the old-school greatness of John Ford, but "Tombstone" is one seriously memorable movie.

"Tombstone" may now be considered one of the most beloved Westerns of the late twentieth century, but the film had an incredibly rocky path from the page to the big screen. "Tombstone" was intended to be the directorial debut of "Glory" screenwriter Kevin Jarre, but when he fell behind schedule a month into the shoot, producer Andrew Vajna fired him and brought in veteran helmer George P. Cosmatos ("Rambo: First Blood Part II" and "Leviathan") to ostensibly drag the movie to the finish line.
We've since learned that, after Jarre's departure, the driving creative force on "Tombstone" was star Kurt Russell. Cast as legendary lawman Wyatt Earp, Russell brought a semblance of order to the wayward production by streamlining the lengthy screenplay with producer Jim Jacks. His instincts proved plenty sharp. It's astonishing to think that James Cameron, the mastermind behind FX-laden mega-blockbusters like "Titanic" and "Avatar," once made movies on the cheap. When Cameron made "The Terminator" back in 1984, he was able to assemble relatively low-rent effects to produce some pretty incredible visuals. In one scene, for instance, after actor Arnold Schwarzenegger was briefly on fire, Cameron needed his jacket to realistically smolder. Cameron didn't want to burn Schwarzenegger with anything pyrotechnic, so he threw some (inexpensive) acid onto Arnold's jacket. The dissolving material looked like smoke.
"Terminator" fans might also know the story of how Cameron needed a shot of the killer robot's glowing mechanical eyeball flickering out at the film's conclusion. The achieve the shot, Cameron bought a small red lightbulb at an electronics store, crushed it in between two pieces of styrofoam that he painted silver, and blew cigarette smoke into the frame. He filmed the scene in his garage.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is now available on VOD. There’s no way around it – the film’s theatrical release was a huge disappointment, as it earned back only a fraction of its reported budget and has put the release of the second film in major jeopardy. However, now that it’s streaming, the hope is that people will be able to discover it at home, perhaps paving the way for this saga to continue. If you’ve watched Horizon and are jonesing for more modern westerns to check out, here are some we really like here at JoBlo.

"Terminator Zero" was one of several animated shows that blew us away at Netflix's June 2024 animation presentation. Now, fans can have their first proper look at the anime series by way of a brand new trailer that reveals more than ever before about this Japan-set installment in the "Terminator" franchise.
The series focuses on Eiko, a resistance fighter from 2022 who's sent back to 1997 to protect scientist Malcolm Lee from a Terminator played by none other than Timothy Olyphant. Yes, the "Justified" star will be voicing the main Terminator in "Zero," but it seems this won't be anything like Arnold Schwarzenegger's hulking T-800. Instead, as showrunner/executive producer/writer Mattson Tomlin ("Project Power") told Empire Magazine, this cyborg will be more of a "Creepy Fish Man," which apparently means he's "not handsome," "a little cross-eyed," and "very spooky." But there has never been any documentary quite as extensive, expansive or exhaustive as Aliens Expanded, a title that lives heartily up to its name due to a near-five-hour runtime — not quite as long as an unusually long hypersleep, but not far off. It comes from writer-director Ian Nathan, who has literally written the book on the film.
As with 2019’s Memory: The Origins Of Alien, about Ridley Scott’s original film (also featuring contributions from Nathan), this aims to be the definitive take on a definitive genre classic. With a runtime like that, it is fair to...

The Dune franchise has become a spectacular piece of cinema with Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the Frank Herbert novels. Starring Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh among so many other actors, the expected trilogy is already two movies down, with one more in the works. But before Villeneuve changed people’s mind about the spice fields of Arrakis and the Empire, there were a few other tries to bring this story to life.
Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler in Dune: Part Two | Legendary Pictures
The most successful of them, it terms of the audience getting a full length movie, was the one made by David Lynch. The 1984 adaptation of Dune was a critical and commercial failure, becoming one of the few films in David Lynch’s career that was not accepted by the people. As film writer Max Evry once said, it was the “black sheep of David Lynch’s filmography.

For whatever reason, ever since 1991's "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," the "Terminator" franchise just hasn't been able to escape its own shadow. Every successive film in the saga has been seemingly unable to reinvigorate the series, and part of the issue has been a persistent desire to recreate and pay homage to the movies that first established the franchise as the gargantuan it is. Whether it was "Terminator Salvation" and its uncanny CGI version of a young Arnold Schwarzenegger, or "Terminator Genisys" attempting to literally revisit the opening scenes of the original "Terminator," the series can't seem to let the past go.
But as fans know all too well, there is no fate but what we make for ourselves. In other words, there's no reason why successive generations need to cling to past iterations to do the source material justice. There's a reason why characters such as Batman and Bond...

To immediately address a serious question posed by this headline: It was a fake gun. I know there are some wild stories about Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1980s, but my dude wasn't that wild.
Ok, let's back up for a minute. James Cameron's 1984 sci-fi horror classic "The Terminator" is one of the most amazing, down-and-dirty, "holy crap, this is a great idea executed perfectly" movies of that entire decade, and a huge part of the reason for its success is Arnold Schwarzenegger's terrifying portrayal of the story's robotic antagonist. When Michael Biehn's Kyle Reese describes the Terminator as something that "can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead," it's one of the most bone-chilling moments in the film. How the heck is Sarah Connor supposed to survive against something like that?...

George P. Cosmatos' 1993 Western "Tombstone" begins in the year 1879 and ends in 1881 at the infamous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Said gunfight was a notably bloody shootout between the local law enforcers of Tombstone, Arizona and a local gang of criminals nicknamed the Cowboys. The law was represented by the Earp brothers Wyatt, Virgil, and James, and they have gone down as important figures in the history of the American West.
In the movie, Wyatt Earp is played by Kurt Russell, and the old lawman is depicted as a formerly violent man trying to eschew his instincts to shoot others. Wyatt hopes to be peaceful and gentle and live quietly with his common-law wife Sadie (Dana Delaney). Spoiler alert: he's not successful. Indeed, the violence is so brazenly inevitable in Westerns, one wonders why anyone even entertains the thought of giving peace a chance. The potential gunshot victims in...

You don't need all your fingers to count the Marvel Comics stories more influential than "X-Men: Days of Future Past."
In the dark future of 2013, America has been conquered by the mutant-hunting Sentinel robots. Most of the X-Men are gone, mutants live in concentration camps, and the world stands on its nuclear brink as the other nations prepare to strike against the Sentinels. To prevent this apocalypse, X-Woman Kate Pryde travels back in time.
You see, things went to Hell on Halloween 1980. Mystique and her Brotherhood of Evil Mutants assassinated anti-mutant Senator Robert Kelly, intent on showing humanity they will supplant them as the Cro-Magnon did the Neanderthal. Instead, this event inflamed anti-mutant sentiment and led to the Sentinel takeover. If Kelly isn't assassinated, maybe this awful future will never happen.
"Days of Future Past" was Byrne's penultimate story on his original "X-Men" and he goes with a banger.

Is it fair to say that "Tombstone" is one of the best Westerns ever made? At the very least, it's definitely one of the best modern Westerns. Directed by George P. Cosmatos, the stylish, violent saga tells the story of Wyatt Earp and the infamous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Kurt Russell and his glorious mustache stars as Earp, with Val Kilmer stealing the entire movie as Earp's sickly buddy, Doc Holliday. The stacked cast also includes Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, Michael Biehn, Dana Delany, Michael Rooker, Billy Zane, Charlton Heston, and a voice cameo from Robert Mitchum.
When you make a Western, certain accoutrements are baked into the material. We're talking pistols, cowboy boots, big ol' hats, and of course, horses. Kurt Russell sat down with Esquire for a career-spanning interview, and during the course of the conversation, the actor fondly recalled his time working with his horse on "Tombstone.

EW has shared two new official promo stills for Alien: Romulus as part of their summer preview, and one of 'em pays homage to a scene from Aliens.
In James Cameron's follow-up to Ridley Scott's '70s classic, Corporal Hicks (Michael Biehn) shows Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) how to use a pulse rifle before the crew land in some real pretty sh*t with the attacking Xenomorphs, and the moment is recreated here with Archie Renaux's Tyler and Cailee Spaeny's Rain Carradine.
The second image gives us another look at a Xenomorph about to give an unfortunate crew member a very bad day.
While the previous movies focused on blue-collar colleagues, soldiers, and prisoners, director Fede Alvarez explains how Romulus will take a different approach by introducing a group of characters who have become as close as family.

James Cameron's Aliens is, undisputedly, one of the greatest films ever made, and a perennial favourite of all at Empire. Small wonder then that Empire’s very own Ian Nathan, who has written books about the original Alien, elected to take the deepest of deep dives, directing new documentary Aliens Expanded. The film gets under the skin of all the movie’s iconic moments, including the classic ‘egg chamber’ scene, which you can hear Cameron himself describing the inspiration for in the exclusive clip below.
In a scene-by-scene analysis of the film, Aliens Expanded features interviews with many of the cast and crew, including Michael Biehn, Lance Henriksen, Carrie Henn and many more — not to mention Empire’s resident Aliens obsessive James Dyer.
“This is the opportunity of a lifetime,” says Nathan. “I have been gripped by Aliens from the day I saw it and it has never let me go.

Written and Directed by Stevan Mena on a budget of around $200,000, Malevolence was only released in ten theaters after it was purchased by Anchor Bay and released direct-to-dvd like so many other indie horrors. This one has many of the same pratfalls as its bargain bin brethren, which have probably helped to keep it hidden all these years. But it also has some unforgettable moments that will make horror fans (especially fans of the original Halloween) smile and point at the TV like Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Malevolence is the story of a silent and masked killer told through the lens of a group of bank robbers hiding out after a score. The bank robbery is only experienced audibly from the outside of the bank, but whether the film has the budgetary means to handle this portion well or not, the idea of mixing a...

James Cameron has directed two Terminator movies: The Terminator (1984) and Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991). The sci-fi action franchise is one of the oldest and longest-running in Hollywood. Cameron’s movie stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn, Linda Hamilton, and Paul Winfield.
Recently, in an interview, the Avatar director said that he would think thoroughly before making movies like The Terminator. The director revealed that when he was making the 1984 movie, he realised he knew nothing about guns. However, he further stated that it’s America, and he can just go buy a gun wherever he wants.

In 1979, Ridley Scott unleashed the science fiction classic "Alien" upon audiences and unwittingly kickstarted a lucrative franchise comprised of seven sequels and an assortment of books, comics, and video games. In August 2024, Fede Álvarez plans to release "Alien: Romulus," which will hopefully push the series in a creative new direction, delivering more Xenomorph horror action for audiences to enjoy.
The "Alien" franchise has amassed $1.6 billion at the global box office, despite more than a few bumps. Films such as David Fincher's "Alien 3" and Scott's own "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant" divided audiences with their strange methodology. In contrast, the "Alien vs Predator" films never amounted to more than cynical cash grabs. These sequels/prequels also retconned important lore or added new details to the Xenomorph that do not jibe with previously established material, leaving fans scrambling to make sense of the "Alien" timeline. Some of their theories are perfectly acceptable,...

Who wants to come along and ride with James Cameron on a Fantastic Voyage? During a Paris masterclass at Cinematheque Francaise showcasing the legendary filmmaker’s talent as a graphic artist, Cameron commented on his long-gestating remake of the Richard Fleischer-directed science-fiction adventure film Fantastic Voyage, saying he still plans to produce a remake of the classic cinematic gem.
“We’ve been developing it for a number of years, and we plan to go ahead with it very soon,” Cameron said about producing the remake with his friend Jon Landau. “Raquel Welch is not available, but we think we can make a pretty good movie.” In 1966’s Fantastic Voyage, a crew is shrunk and injected into the bloodstream of a comatose scientist to repair a blood clot.

James Cameron delivered a masterclass in Paris on Thursday night following a sold-out screening of his 1984 breakout “The Terminator.” With the title so fresh in his mind, the filmmaker spent much of the session sharing stories from the project’s improbable making of.
For one thing, what the production lacked in financial resources it made up for in pre-production time — eight months, to be exact, as the team waited for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s schedule to clear.

For years, rights issues have held up updated video releases of James Cameron’s Aliens, The Abyss, and True Lies, with the latter two features skipping Blu-ray entirely. At last, all three have come to 4K Uhd, and their joint release allows one to better appreciate the unexpected connections that link these otherwise completely distinct features.
On a basic level, all three films, covering less than a decade from 1986 to 1994, chart one of the most meteoric career rises in Hollywood history—one that you can see in their exponentially increasing budgets and scale. Aliens, made in the wake of Cameron’s breakout success of 1984’s The Terminator, was produced for a paltry $18 million, not much more than the $11 million allocated to Ridley Scott’s Alien nearly a decade earlier. But Cameron, who cut his teeth in Roger Corman’s micro-budget talent incubator, knew how to stretch a dollar to its maximum use.

They say “In space no one can hear you scream.” Buuuuuuuut we’ve seen through eight Alien films that if you’re in a spaceship plenty of people can hear you scream. The Xenomorphs have no problem causing their victims a lot of pain. Even though we’ve seen them in a lot of films, fans will mostly agree that after Aliens, the franchise was never the same. But did you know that District 9 director Neill Blomkamp almost made an Aliens sequel?

"The Terminator" is a perfect movie. /Film's own Jacob Hall has argued director James Cameron has never surpassed it. Cameron knows how to get his money's worth from Titanic-sized budgets and the filmmaking world is a better place when he gets to reach the peak of his ambitions. Still, "The Terminator" — a lean sci-fi slasher that's both exciting and foreboding — shows that Cameron could still spin gold with more modest tools.
Even if "The Terminator" isn't much of an actor's picture, it's well-cast, particularly Michael Biehn as haggard time traveler Kyle Reese and, of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger as the titular cyborg assassin. This film was a key step in Schwarzenegger's climb to being the biggest movie star in the world. Even so, it's something of a Hollywood legend how these two weren't the initial picks for these roles.
In particular, it's spread through the grapevine that O.J. Simpson was considered to star as the Terminator.

Terminator is an important film when it comes to science fiction in Hollywood. Sarah Connor, through the Terminator franchise, has become one of the most recognizable female science fiction protagonists, only superseded by Ripley from Aliens. A recent theory has come to light, pointing out that Sarah Connor might have lied to her son about who his father was, which was originally ‘revealed’ to be his best friend from the future, Kyle Reese.
Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese in The Terminator
Kyle Reese goes back in time to protect Sarah Connor, whose future son leads the rebellion against the machines and is almost successful in overthrowing Skynet and its mechanical monsters. Sarah tells John that his father is Kyle Reese, but the theory states this must be a lie told by Sarah to motivate John to become the hero of humanity that he is supposed to be.

David Lynch's "Dune" was mostly seen as a misstep for the celebrated director back in 1984. As we gear up for the bleak blockbuster that is Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two," Lynch's "Dune" now occupies an unusual space in the public consciousness — somewhere between cult classic and historic blunder. There are undoubtedly plenty of things wrong with "Dune" 1984, and the film suffered a brutal critical and commercial reception. But forty years after Lynch's $40 million spectacle bombed at the box office, some have come to see the films' positives, arguing that "Dune" 1984 is better than its reputation suggests.
Which, as it happens, is a perfectly reasonable point of view. Aside from the impressive set and costume design, "Dune" actually featured some pretty good visual effects for the time. What's more, the casting was excellent. Lynch may have ruthlessly denied Glenn Close for a part in "Dune," but luckily for him,...

The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral lasted under one minute and took place over 140 years ago. Tombstone, which dramatizes said gunfight, was made just over 30 years ago and already has more mystery to it. We may know who killed who that October day in Arizona, but there’s still some discrepancies over who truly directed 1993’s Tombstone. One thing’s for sure: Michael Biehn knows it wasn’t Kurt Russell…despite what Kurt Russell may say.
Speaking on Michael Rosenbaum on Inside of You, Biehn – who played outlaw Johnny Ringo – tried to once again shut down the rumors that Russell was the true director of Tombstone. “I get so f’in’ tired of people asking me if Kurt Russell directed the movie…Kurt Russell did not direct the movie. Kurt Russell was responsible for getting the movie off the ground. I never would have played Johnny Ringo if it wasn’t for Kurt Russell.
