Paul Rudd made his big-screen debut in Amy Hecklering's high-profile modernization of Jane Austen's "Emma," "Clueless" in 1995. He immediately gained a great deal of attention because he was very handsome, and he was very funny. Fun trivia: Rudd was 25 when he filmed "Clueless" in 1995 and, in 2024, he somehow only looks 31. Before "Clueless," Rudd appeared in a Super Nintendo commercial, and he had a recurring role in later seasons of the soap opera "Sisters." He also starred in all six episodes of the short-lived 1994 Fox sitcom "Wild Oats." These days, Rudd is a massive movie star, having established himself as one of the better comedic actors of his generation, and becoming involved with the gigantic Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing Ant-Man.
But he wasn't always playing with power. Many actors make their way into the mainstream through the portal of horror, starting their careers in slasher movies and ghost stories. Adam Scott,...

Damien Leone’s “Terrifier 3” (Iconic/Cineverse) grossed about $27 million in the U.S./Canada in its first week. That will make it easily #1, helped by the second-week collapse of “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Warner Bros.), which will end up #4 with around $10 million.
The slasher/horror sequel will ultimately earn a massive profit. With a reported production and marketing cost of around $5 million and additional revenues, “Terrifier 3” investors could easily see profits far exceeding $50 million.
Apart from its cost, other elements leading up to the slasher film’s success are unusual. As with any sleeper hit, its successes will be examined by studios to see if they can be replicated.
If “Terrifier 3” does lead to major changes, it will follow the lead of John Carpenter’s “Halloween” (1978) and Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez’s “The Blair Witch Project” (1999). And not just in terms of its impact on the horror genre.

The worlds of horror will collide in a highly anticipated graphic novel debut this spring as two of the genre’s most iconic names—John Carpenter and the late George A. Romero—join forces for John Carpenter Presents George A. Romero’s The Amusement Park. Based on Romero’s once-lost 1975 film, The Amusement Park, the graphic novel will be available in stores and online beginning May 7, 2025, thanks to a collaboration between Storm King Comics and the George A. Romero Foundation.
Originally conceived as a public service announcement, The Amusement Park explores themes of ageism and society’s neglect of the elderly through Romero’s distinct and unsettling lens. Though the film was shelved for decades, it has been recently restored and praised for its hauntingly surreal portrayal of growing old. Now, this powerful piece of Romero’s legacy will reach a new generation, reimagined as a graphic novel.

The font in question is Aguafina Script Pro and it was designed by Alejandro Paul and Angel Koziupa for the Argentina-based Sudtipos type foundry. The Sudtipos website describes Aguafina Script Pro as “graceful,...

A few years ago, George A. Romero‘s long lost 1973 film The Amusement Park was released through the Shudder streaming service in North America, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. It was then given a Blu-ray release. Now, our friends at Bloody Disgusting have revealed that The Amusement Park is getting a graphic novel adaptation that Storm King Comics will be releasing as part of their John Carpenter Presents line! The graphic novel’s full title is John Carpenter Presents George A. Romero’s The Amusement Park, and it’s “an all-new artistic interpretation of the unique film.”
Romero was hired to make The Amusement Park by the Lutheran Society, and it was meant to be a TV PSA on elder abuse. The film was shelved when the Lutheran Society saw how strange and disturbing it was, but thankfully Romero’s fans have the opportunity to watch it now,...

"The mayor's melting people!" Screambox has revealed an official trailer for Street Trash, a demented, uber-gory horror creation from South Africa. It'll be out on VOD and streaming on Screambox this fall. It's actually an update on a horror cult classic from 1987 also called Street Trash, but it's not a direct copy. "Our reimagining of Street Trash takes place in Cape Town, South Africa where the growing divide between rich and poor has changed the world as we know it," director Ryan Kruger explains. "I was a huge fan of the original Street Trash when I was a kid, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to introduce a whole new generation to the melted gonzo goodness that made the original such a classic." This new version stars Sean Cameron Michael, Donna Cormack-Thomson, & Joe Vaz. Shot entirely on 35mm, the film is described as "raw, hilarious, packed with vibrant characters...

A few years ago, Shudder unearthed George A. Romero‘s long-lost The Amusement Park, a previously unseen nightmare that Romero made back in the early 1970s. The 60-minute film was actually a PSA on age discrimination that Romero was hired to make early in his career, filmed for TV but never actually released – until Shudder finally brought it to light.
Now, The Amusement Park has been turned into a graphic novel by Storm King Comics!
George A. Romero’s The Amusement Park becomes an original graphic novel this spring when Storm King Comics releases John Carpenter Presents George A. Romero’s The Amusement Park, an all-new artistic interpretation of the unique film.

The blood-thirsty hitchhiker, the escaped psycho with a hook for a hand, the babysitter and the call that is somehow unequivocally coming from inside the house; we all known them. The modern day fables that have shaped our fears and behaviours arguably more than any others. Urban legends that all seem to have sprung out of the American post-war hangover of the 1950s and ’60s, as inequality took seed and the dark side of the new white-picket-fence suburbia slowly set in off-screen. Ed Gein and Ted Bundy and the Moors Murders filled the news. Doubts about our fellow man, and about what they’re capable of. About how we very much aren’t “all in this together”; that the days of blindly trusting one another are all but over. That people, strangers in particular, are more likely to be dangerous than helpful.
And naturally, those cautionary tales bled into culture and filmmaking.

Wes Craven's "A Nightmare on Elm Street" turns 40 this year, and Freddy Krueger's popularity doesn't seem to show any signs of stopping. The now iconic slasher birthed a beloved horror franchise and turned stars Robert Englund and Heather Langenkamp into treasured fixtures of the genre. I spoke with Robert Englund last year about his career, so when I was given the chance to interview him and Langenkamp in honor of the film's anniversary, instead of asking him about Freddy Krueger again, I asked Heather Langenkamp to give her feelings on "the bastard son of 100 maniacs" and Englund to give his thoughts on Nancy Thompson.

The longer a horror franchise goes, the more lore needs to be developed, almost by default. After all, how else to explain why and how a series' central villain/spirit/killer keeps coming back to pester the living? While some franchises have enough lore baked into the premise of the series and characters right from the get-go so as not to need too much elaboration — the Cenobites are called from Hell by the Lament Configuration, Charles Lee Ray is into voodoo resurrection, etc. — others find themselves having to pile new facets onto the characters to try and explain why this struggle of Good vs. Evil is continual. This latter group tends to contain most of the slasher franchises, as series like "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th" eventually find themselves either embracing explicitly supernatural ideas or having to shed continuity and start over.

When it comes to Halloween slashers, John Carpenter’s Halloween still reigns supreme all these years later. Not only did it launch an enduring franchise, but it inspired a slasher craze. Of course, it’s far from the only slasher movie set around our favorite holiday.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to Halloween slashers beyond the Halloween franchise that similarly bring the carnage and holiday spirit in equal measure.
These slashers unleash buckets of blood (and then some), using Halloween as a stunning backdrop for the mayhem, from pumpkins galore to haunt attractions from hell.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

As Marty McFly once prophetically claimed after his game-changing appearance at 1955's Enchantment Under the Sea dance, "I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it." This phrase pretty perfectly sums up the phenomenon of reappraisal in the arts, especially cinema. Whether a film is truly something pioneering and ahead of its time, or whether it's just lost in the shuffle due to extenuating circumstances, the (relative) immortality of movies allows them to be periodically rediscovered and newly appreciated for what they are, once removed from the weight of expectation and other contemporary factors. This doesn't just happen to films that fly under the radar, either; even the most high-profile releases, movies featuring A-list megastars made by big name directors, can initially receive a tepid response only to become bonafide classics years, perhaps even decades, later. For examples of this, just take a...

It hardly needs repeating, but director John Carpenter is known for making multiple horror classics, including "Halloween," "The Fog," "Christine," "The Thing," "Prince of Darkness," "In the Mouth of Madness" and "Vampires." Although Carpenter doesn't have a notable, recognizable style or motif in his filmography (apart from recurring actors) he does seem to possess a subtle, natural mastery of filmmaking craft that makes all his films, even the bad ones, imminently watchable.
Carpenter loves horror, of course, but oddly, he's not a horror guy at heart. He possesses an old-world workman's attitude when it comes to filmmaking, just sort of sussing out, by instinct, how to shoot a scene, regardless of genre. Carpenter has given multiple interviews where he's talked about monster movies and sci-fi flicks that inspired him, but moreso, Carpenter talks about the films of John Ford and Howard Hawks, two American filmmakers best known for their high-profile Westerns.

When John Carpenter made the original “Halloween” in 1978, it was just another horror movie in a long line of horror movies. But the blockbuster success of this low-budget movie, about a masked killer murdering babysitters, made “Halloween” a cultural institution. The film spawned legions of imitators and codified the slasher genre as we still know it. And yet the official “Halloween” franchise has often struggled to meet the standard of the movie that inspired the craze. Let’s look back at all of these classic (and not so classic) horror movies, and see how they stack up.

Director Bob Clark’s seminal slasher Black Christmas is now 50 years old – and its conversation about reproductive rights is as relevant today as ever.
A bold slasher that has carved its path to become a festive favourite, Black Christmas – released 50 years ago today – is also an unwitting pro-choice manifesto.
Five decades after the Canadian movie first graced the big screen, and as we witness reproductive rights being eroded, its abortion storyline rings as a chilling, powerful reminder of what’s at stake in the 21st century.
Premiered on the 11th October 1974, Canadian director Bob Clark’s holiday-themed film is perhaps best known as one of the original slasher horrors, inspired by a real-life murder spree in Montreal. Following in the footsteps of cult thrillers such as Peeping Tom and Psycho, the film lays the groundwork for future mainstream blood-fests – most obviously John Carpenter’s seminal Halloween in 1978.

Over the course of three In Search of Darkness documentary films, all of which were over four hours long (with one of them nearly reaching the six hour mark), director David Weiner did an incredible job of digging into the many great (and some not-so-great) horror movies that were released in the 1980s. There were still so many movies left uncovered that Weiner could circle back and continue looking into ’80s movies for years to come – but instead, he has decided to move forward into the ’90s with the upcoming documentary In Search of Darkness: 1990 – 1994. At the time, fans considered the horror genre to be in a lull, a downswing from the heights it reached in the ’80s. But with this movie, Weiner aims to point out that we did still get a lot of good horror movies during that time period. You can get a sample of the...

Just like Michael Myers, the Halloween franchise never truly dies!
Ever since the beloved horror movie series kicked off in 1978 with the original Halloween by John Carpenter starring Jamie Lee Curtis, the franchise has since added nearly a dozen remakes and sequels along the way.
While many of the sequels aren’t exactly as beloved by critics, some of the more recent reboots and retellings of the tale have brought a new energy and appreciation to the film franchise.
We’ve put together all of the movies in the Halloween universe, as based on their scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

What can we say about Chevy Chase on his 81st birthday that we haven’t already said before?
Here’s the good news: We don’t have to say it. After decades of burning down every bridge in sight, it was no problem to find 81 burns to light the candles on his cake. Below is a birthday portrait of the man of the hour, courtesy of the co-workers, directors and other unfortunates who’ve worked with Chase over the years.

When it comes to iconic cars in films and TV shows, some stand out: Kitt, the Batmobile, the A-Team van, the time-travelling DeLorean… and, if you noticed all the Easter eggs in Ready Player One, the 1958 Plymouth Fury known as Christine. That car was a death trap on wheels, but not because of bad handling […]

When people want to watch horror movies for Halloween, one of the most popular is, of course, Halloween. Whoever gave the film that title was a genius because it made the movie requisite seasonal viewing for nearly 40 years. However, John Carpenter’s seminal slasher film doesn’t embody the spirit of October 31st as much as a later cult classic does. Here’s a look at the perfect film to watch at the end of this month.
John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’ is scary but it isn’t darkly funny like another movie
Carpenter’s Halloween is plenty scary. It has a macabre central figure (Michael Myers), a blood pressure raising performance from Jamie Lee Curtis, who seems genuinely horrified for much of the movie, and a terrifying sountrack. What the film is missing is the season’s sense of mischief.
Enter Trick ‘r Treat. This 2009 horror comedy mixes all sides of the holiday: the childish,...

We sometimes too often think of directors as straight-faced stiffs, their only passion in life being celluloid. But with all of the pressures that go into making a major motion picture, of course they want to unwind, too. And quite a few do it with video games, with some of its biggest fans found in the likes of Guillermo del Toro, John Carpenter and even Steven Spielberg. Just don’t give Steve a controller!
Max Spielberg recently said of his father, “He loves gaming, he’s the one that got me into it. He plays games, he’s a big PC gamer and so that’s kind of our bonding point as well. He’s like, ‘Hey what’s good, what new Call of Duty should I be playing, send me a list of the top five shooters, I’ll get ‘em downloaded and we can play ‘em together when...

Horror movies might be known more for death scenes than anything else. For that reason, pinning down the best horror movie death should be challenging — but it isn’t. One obscure, eerie Yuletide scene from the 1970s takes the cake.
The best horror movie death involves a bizarre weapon
When people think of the great murder set pieces, they often think of slasher sequences like the shower scene from Psycho and the time Kevin Bacon’s throat got slit in Friday the 13th. One of the more underappreciated slashers is 1974’s Black Christmas. It’s not forgotten, but it never inspired the sort of fandom as A Nightmare on Elm Street or Child’s Play. Regardless, Black Christmas has some incredible tension and tantalizing unanswered questions.
The premise revolves around an unseen, unknown assailant who breaks into a sorority house during the Christmas season and starts living in the attic. One by one,...

"The Thing" is the kind of film that, decades after its release, finds strength in its ambiguity. Some watch John Carpenter's seminal horror classic and see an allusion to the AIDS crisis of the '80s. Others say it represents the inherent fear of the Other. It can be all of those things — and more if you think hard enough — as "The Thing" remains surprisingly timeless. That's due in part to the theme that Carpenter chose to focus on throughout the film: not only did it give this story a clear through line, but it also helped Carpenter score his leading man, Kurt Russell.
Carpenter and Russell worked together twice before teaming up for "The Thing," but the actor needed just a little convincing before joining the project. Russell recounted his early conversations with Carpenter in a retrospective with GQ, and the pitch that ultimately inspired him to join the film.

If horror was an art form, Terrifier 3 might just be the work of Michelangelo. October, like every year, brings with it the season of Halloween and fright nights. Hollywood opens its floor to more scary movies and Scream sequels. And like clockwork, fans flock to the theaters to have their fair share of jump scares before all the pumpkin decorations begin to go down.

But for a genre that always delivers no matter how many sequels one may make, it can often feel a bit oversaturated or overdone. After all, there are only so many ways a guy in a mask can come at you with an axe before it starts to get predictive. Although there can be no dissing the original legends like John Carpenter and Stephen King, some modern auteurs like Mike Flanagan and Ari Aster have found a way around that problem.

A great way to create horror is to take something that’s supposed to spark joy, then twist it into something sinister. Pennywise from It, the animatronic horrors of Five Nights at Freddy’s, and Doki Doki Literature Club all understand this concept and wield it like a knife.
Clapperheads’ new game Zoochosis applies this concept to zoos, twisting the normally adorable animals into nightmarish beasts worthy of John Carpenter’s The Thing. While this is a great concept, a lot of the gameplay focus seems to be on the more the process of the mundane aspects of the zoo rather than the horrors that lie within.
It starts out simply, but mysteriously. You take an overnight job at a zoo in order to help you and your family get out of poverty, except nothing is right with the place. It’s been closed for a long time and no one knows why,...

Salem’s Lot has a legendary status not unlike the vampire creatures that are the chief antagonists therein. While we are finally getting the newest movie adaptation this month after what seemed like an eternity in development and then an unceremonious shelving, the original continues to have a cult classic aura around it. There was a second TV miniseries that came out on TNT in 2004 but the quality of that one varies depending on who you talk to. Even with all the cache that the original miniseries brings to the table, it had been years since I had watched it. It deserved a revisit and make no mistake, this addition to the King cinematic universe needed a remake more than nearly anything else he has put out.
Originally Salem’s Lot was going to be a theatrical experience but Warner Brothers, who had purchased the rights, had a hard time settling on the story and the personnel.

For a lot of horror fans, October is their favorite month of the year, giving us 31 full days to watch even more horror movies than we do throughout the rest of the year, including films that are set on the holiday that ends the month: Halloween. Of course, the Halloween-set horror movies that get the most views are the slasher movies that share their name with the holiday. So with fresh viewings of every Halloween movie taken in, we have assembled a list: Halloween Movies Ranked, from worst to best. Check it out:

John Carpenter’s Halloween has influenced everything from other slasher flicks to even music videos. With her new visual “Undone,” indie-pop artist Young Summer rips images from the iconic 1978 film for a tension-splitting story that guarantees to creep under the skin.
Young Summer (real name Bobbie Allen) stars in the video as a woman unaware of her surroundings. While out walking her adorable pooch Scrappy, a stalker (Miloš Šarenac) wearing all black lurks from the corners of each frame.
Everything about the brand new “Undone” music video, on which she worked with frequent collaborator and cinematographer Seth Dunlap, feels very 1970s. From long lens shots to a vibrant but muted color grading, Allen (director/editor) masterfully laces suspense by using various classic film techniques and equipment – namely the telephoto Canon Fd 50-300mm T/4.9 zoom Lens.
“I knew using that long zoom for the spy shots would make the stalking...

Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man – Universal has brought them all back to the screen in the decades since their glory days in the 1930s and ’40s. But one classic Universal monster who hasn’t had a new movie since the 1950s is the Creature from the Black Lagoon, a.k.a. the Gill Man. The closest we’ve gotten is the unofficial version of the creature that was seen in the 1987 classic The Monster Squad… but last month, it was reported that genre regular James Wan and his production company Atomic Monster are developing “a grounded modernized retelling” of Creature from the Black Lagoon that will lean into “visceral horror while paying respect to the original classic.” Now, Deadline has learned that this Creature from the Black Lagoon reboot will be written by Sean Tretta.

In addition to Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu and Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man, another classic horror movie monster is getting ready for a return with director James Wan’s Creature from the Black Lagoon, in the works from Atomic Monster and Universal Pictures. Sean Tretta will write the film. Deadline notes, “The screenplay is based off a treatment written by James Wan, Rafael Jordan and Bryan Coyne.”
Deadline also reports, “Wan is in early talks to potentially direct a grounded modernized retelling that leans into visceral horror whilst paying respect to the original classic.”
Unlike fellow Universal Monsters classics including Frankenstein, Wolf Man, and Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon hasn’t been the subject of countless remakes over the years, which makes it ripe for revival here in the present day. Guillermo del Toro’s...
