Beniamino and his family have lived in a school since the end of World War II, but five years have passed and they are compelled to move, but finding an apartment in Rome is difficult. First he gets a job as keeper of a graveyard but during the night they mistake Checchino for a ghost and flee. Then they try lo live in the Coliseum. Lastly they find a fine, large apartment, only to find out that the same apartment has been rented to other people.

The film is composed of several small stories that have to do with the votes of politicians in Italy in the sixties.

After their boss' death, two clerks eagerly await the arrival of the next one, each one of them hoping to become the apple of his eye. They compete in every possible way to impress him, which causes lots of trouble and many misunderstandings.

The story takes inspiration from a real case: Bruneri/Canella, Italy 1926. A man is hospitalized in a neurological clinic, suffering from amnesia. After seeing his photo in the newspaper, Mrs. Ballerini realizes that he is her husband and brings him home; then Mrs. Polacich recognizes him as her husband. At one point he is brought to court accused of being a thief named Mr. LoBianco. Finally all of his identities are found to be false for different reasons, and he decides that from now on, it's just him and his dog.
