Bonifatius[1] (Romae natus die ignoto, mortuus die 4 Septembris 422) fuit episcopus Romae, papa Ecclesiae Catholicae Romanae a die 28 Decembris 418.

De vita

Pauca de vita Bonifatii nota sunt. Secundum librum pontificalem Bonifatius, presbyteri Iocundi filius Romanus erat. Bonifatius a papa Damaso ordinatus est et a papa Innocentio Constantinopolim circiter anno 405 missus est.

Pontificatus

Post mortem papae Zosimi alii presbyteri Romani Eulalium papam creaverunt, alii Bonifatium I elegerunt. Etiam praefectus urbis Symmachus et imperator Honorius Eulalio favebant. Imperator synodum Ravennae constituit, ut inter duos papas iudicaret, et iussit utrosque papas Romam relinquere, sed Eulalius Romae mansit. Honorius ergo electionem Bonifatii confirmavit.
