Pulvis pyrius vel pulvis incendiarius vel pulvis tormentarius est mixtura trium chemicorum, videlicet carbonis, sulfuris, et salis petrae, quae summa cum rapiditate flagrat, magnum gasium volumen efficiens. Haec gasia tam rapide expandunt ut, cum confiniuntur, eruptionem violentem creent. Adhibebatur in sclopetis (quapropter Anglice gunpowder, scilicet 'pulvis sclopeti' dicitur) ubi, eruptione temperata, gasia pulveris flagrantis glandem plumbeam ex tubo propellunt.

Pulvis pyrius a Sinensibus creatus creditur, et in Europa ab saeculo tertio decimo notescebat postquam formula eius a Rogerio Bacone descripta est.
