| Abstract: | "On the way to Bentheim Drawing journeys through Twente in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, many young artists traveled through the country in search of suitable vistas, river landscapes and forests. The province of Overijssel, the Twente region and the Dutch-German border are also among the destinations of landscape artists. Bentheim Castle, just across the border from Oldenzaal, has been drawn and painted several times, but the Twente region is also depicted. For example, Jacob van Ruisdael and Meindert Hobbema draw various watermills and half-timbered houses in Twente. Cornelis Pronk and Abraham de Haen take the many estates in the region as their subject. This publication will delve deeper into the development of landscape drawings, the changes in the landscape and the appeal of Eastern Netherlands for the artists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries."--Page 4 of cover |
