Abstract:Gardens as an expression of human relationships with nature have also been an articulation of the culture of the people, the place and the time. The Indian landscape has a very rich garden design tradition wherein gardens wove their way into urban, suburban and rural landscapes imparting them with many secular and sacred meanings. In giving meaning to human existence they enriched peoples lives by providing a deep and inspirational sense of a much needed bond between human beings and nature. As a very vulnerable part of our heritage, today very few of these gardens survive. Since these gardens are continuously being embedded in new contexts and facing new challenges, the narrative of their conservation has to be spelt out against the larger fabric of development of the area where they become relevant in economic, social and ecological terms. For these gardens to be conserved in the true sense of the word, they have to be integrated with our daily lives in a purposeful way. However, the real rationale to their conservation also lies in keeping alive the spirit of the garden, a spirit that can still touch the soul of contemporary living. 'Conserving the spirit of a historic garden' seeks to draw our attention to how these historic gardens can continue to be a valued asset and why it is necessary to adopt proper methodologies for their sensitive and meaningful conservation--Page 4 of cover
