Abstract: | "In Beau Monde on Empire’s Edge, Mayhill C. Fowler tells the story of the rise and fall of a group of artists and officials in early Soviet Ukraine (1920s-1930s) who created a vibrant theatre that was both Soviet and Ukrainian. This collective biography explores the politics of cultural production in the Soviet Union by focusing on the diverse popular theatre that developed in and around Kharkiv. Unlike their contemporaries in Moscow and Leningrad, these artists from the "periphery" have been all but forgotten despite the quality of their art. Drawing on source materials in Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, and Yiddish, the book highlights the unique multi-ethnic context of Kharkiv and the challenges inherent in constructing Ukrainian culture in a place that was home to Ukrainians, Russians, Poles, and Jews. A fascinating case study of cultural diversity and transformation, Beau Monde on Empire’s Edge traces the complex relationship between the arts and the state in the early Soviet years and its implications for politics and culture in the region today."-- |
