| Abstract: | Interior and Memory Objects of human creation from Black Africa have long fascinated with their strong expressive power. Many of them have found their way into European museums. The small collection presented here, which consists primarily of sculptures and masks from West and Central Africa, also came to the Lippisches Landesmuseum Detmold a few years ago as a donation. Most of these pieces had been made specifically for sale to foreign buyers, thus belonging to the realm of souvenir art. While the objects made for sale to foreigners were rejected by many Western scholars and curators as inauthentic and not worthy of museums until recent times, today they are appreciated as a specific cultural phenomenon with their own ethnographic value. The Lippe State Museum built up an ethnographic collection in the 19th and early 20th centuries by taking over collections from diplomats, merchants, and explorers who had a personal connection to the land of Lippe |
