Abstract:From the preface: This volume, like its predecessors "NATO after thirty years" (1981) and "The Warsaw Pact: political purpose and military means" (1982) , grew out of a conference held at Kent (Ohio, USA). The authors of the essays in this collection are concerned with superpower and allied ompetition for influence and presence in the Third World. A principal focus is the way in which the continuing East-West rivalry affects the security and security policies of the Third World states and how involvement in these nations affects the blocs and their members. These studies include analyses of the active or potential use of superpower and allied armed forces in regions outside the European, North American, and Eurasian areas as well as encompassing the development and maintenance of vendor-client relationships in the fields of arms transfers, military training, and strategic resource supply.
