| Inhalt: | This book is a history of the Protestant commitment to rural America. It shows how mainline Protestant churches and ecumenical organizations came together in the twentieth century in opposition to industrial agriculture. In its stead, Christian agrarians believed that the health of the nation depended on small rural communities and family farms, and that farming was the most moral way of life. The book explores their philosophical and theological support for agrarianism, including beliefs that the earth was holy, that the church had a responsibility to uplift and reform society, and that family farms were places where people could cooperate with God in taking care of God’s creation. It describes the strategies that Christian agrarians used to try to keep small farmers on the land, particularly from the Great Depression onward. Christian agrarians formed alliances with state universities, cooperative extension services, and each other’s denominations. They experimented with ways of revitalizing rural church life, including new worship services, like Rural Life Sunday, and new strategies for raising financial support, like the Lord’s Acre. Because they believed that the earth was holy, Christian agrarians also became leaders in promoting soil conservation. Decades before the environmental movement, they inspired in their congregations an ethic of environmental stewardship. |
