If I had to sum myself up in one sentence, I'd tell you that I'm an introvert who really likes people.

Since I'm not actually limited to one sentence here, though, here's some other information! Canada is home for me, but I slip reasonably well into a handful of other cultures as well, and I travel so much that I sometimes forget which country I'm in. I live in the downtown core of a city of around a million people, and I have an academic job that I enjoy most of the time but which doesn't come anywhere close to encompassing my whole life. I'm thoroughly geeky by nature, but I tend to get my geek on about other things than the stereotypical geek diet of technology and speculative fiction (for some of what I do get geeky about, see my interests list below). I also love to write, both fiction (I have written both original fiction and fanfiction) and nonfiction. Finally, I have a love-hate relationship with politics: it fascinates me, but so often it makes me sad and angry. While I tend to be more about light than heat in my journal, don't let that fool you; I'm actually extremely passionate and enthusiastic about things I care about, and I value that tendency in others as well (even when their passions and enthusiasms are directed toward different things than mine).

I speak English, German, Dutch, and Italian. I feel strongly about making room for lots of different languages on the internet, so you should always feel free to interact with me in any of those four languages (or any combination of them).

I'm only posting here sporadically these days (and only under lock), but please feel free to seek me out elsewhere: on twitter (for short observations and links, mostly about television and books), on goodreads (where I put my book reviews as I write them), at the Archive Of Our Own (where I used to put my fanfiction back in the day), or by email (for anything private or just to chat).

[For reference: my policies on things like linking, subscribing, and access, and my thoughts on transformative works based on my fanfiction.]
