From the desk of... I’m writing this letter on an otherwise normal Wednesday afternoon. It’s a beautiful sunny morning, and the team is on the road playing baseball in Texas this week. About an hour ago, I gave a tour to a group from Penn-Mar Human Services. This tour was the highlight of my day, maybe even my week. I spent about an hour with the group showing them behind-the-scenes areas of PeoplesBank Park like the clubhouse, press box, and skybox area. The group had great questions, and they had me laughing along the way. At the end of our tour, I thanked them for coming and received a BIG hug from one of my tour guests. For me, this is what working in baseball is all about! Over the years, I’ve given many tours to groups from all different backgrounds. I like to tell jokes on my tour and ask trivia questions like “Do you know why it’s considered to be bad luck to step on the foul line? Because somewhere along the line the groundskeepers started this superstition to keep the lines from getting messed up.” I love seeing the look on a kids face when I show them where DownTown keeps his ATV or where the players take batting practice on a rainy day. We give tours to our sponsorship partners and groups throughout the season. Usually our tour guides are President Eric Menzer, Director of Fan Engagement Reed Gunderson, or I. Each of us gives a pretty unique tour. Here are some highlights from my standard tour: • The area where PeoplesBank Park sits is a geographic low-point in the area, which causes water to really sit in this part of town. Before the ballpark was here, the area was known as “the swamp”. There is an underground drainage system to pump the water out of the field and into the creek. An older gentleman on my tour once informed me that there was actually a gang many years ago known as “the swamp boys.” • The left field home run wall, featuring a manual scoreboard, is known as the “Arch Nemesis.” The wall gets its name because Arch Street is directly behind it. It is actually the tallest wall in professional baseball. It is taller than the Green Monster at Fenway Park and was built tall to prevent the easy home run to left field. It also protects traffic and houses on Arch Street, a state road. • The front plaza is known as the “Brooks Robinson Plaza,” named for one of our owners, the great Orioles Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson. Brooks got his baseball start in York playing for the York White Roses. Brooks visits York from time to time for special events like the annual Brooks Robinson Golf Classic. • There is a tunnel behind the visiting team bullpen that leads to the visiting player clubhouse. I always like to encourage the kids to try out the echo in the tunnel. • One of my favorite spots on the tour is the skybox level. I love to show off the new 1741 Club presented by UMPC. It really is an amazing space. Down the hall are two additional new hospitality rooms, the Monarch and Solomon Suites. The Monarch Suite was named for the “Colored Monarchs of the Diamond,” an Interstate League team that came to York in 1890. The larger Solomon Suite was named to honor King Solomon “Sol” White, second baseman for the Monarchs and a Hall of Famer.
These are just a few of the nuggets of information that I like to share with my tour guests. To get your own behindthe-scenes tour of PeoplesBank Park, book your group outing today!

Real Stories of Hunger Feeding Families with a Lifeline of Love
Writer: Michael Vyskocil Photographer: John Williams
like her who are raising their families on a fixed income. No school…means no food. Here’s where you can make a difference for people like Heather in the York County community. Help the York County Food Bank keep its food pantry shelves stocked this summer and ensure that all children in our community are fed. Bring a nonperishable food donation to PeoplesBank Park, home of the York Revolution. By doing so, you will receive a complimentary ticket to a Monday night Revs baseball game.
“What’s for dinner?” It’s a question we ask practically every day, but for Heather Gibson, it’s a question that doesn’t always have an easy answer.
Last year, the York County Food Bank collected more than 1,000 pounds of food over the course of three Hunger Free Monday games. This year, that number has expanded to eight games. Check the 2019 season schedule, mark your calendars, and bring your donation to one of the Monday night games.
Sitting in her York City living room surrounded by her five children—Tamaya, age 10 1/2; Alyssa, age 9; Isayah, age 6; LaRiyah, age 4; and 1-year-old Jeremiyah—Heather acknowledges the struggles that come with being a single parent and providing food for her children. While food stamps provide some support, “I usually have to pay cash. If I don’t have cash, I still have to provide for them every day,” she said. That’s when the York County Food Bank becomes a lifeline for parents like Heather and approximately 50,000 York County residents, including 17,000 children, who don’t have a consistent supply of and access to nutritious food. Through its food distribution programs like Food For Families and the Emergency Food Voucher Program, the York County Food Bank distributes approximately 50 pounds of food per family to all who come to the Food Bank. Fresh fruits and vegetables, breads, meats, pantry staples, sweets, and more are just some of the variety of items distributed each week — food designed to provide a balanced, healthy diet. “I find meats, cereal, and fruits that I can use on a daily basis meal wise,” Heather says. “I usually go about twice a month to the Food Bank, and I like that I’m getting help putting meals together.” During the summer months, Heather says having access to sources for food becomes critical. “We depend on the schools to provide breakfast and lunch” during the school year, she adds. Providing three meals a day during the summer becomes a challenge for parents
Live here. Give here. You can help people like Heather Gibson feed her children this summer. Through making a generous gift of financial support, volunteering at a local food bank or pantry, or simply running a food drive, you can join the York County Food Bank in its mission to ensure that no child goes hungry. Together, we can create a Hunger Free York. 254 W. Princess St. York, PA 17401-3881 717.846.6435

coaching staff Mark Mason, Manager Mark Mason enters his seventh season at the helm of the York Revolution in 2019. With 419 victories, he is the winningest manager in Revolution history. The longest-tenured manager in club history, “Mase” also enters his 10th overall season on the staff in 2019, matching Enohel Polanco for longesttenured staff member in club history. The two have been part of 640 combined victories. Mason guided a 2018 team that overcame numerous injuries to go 68-58 and boast the league’s most prolific offense. He earned his 400th win as manager on August 16 vs. the New Britain Bees and managed the Freedom Division at the 2018 Atlantic League All-Star Game. Mason orchestrated a dramatic midseason turnaround in 2017, guiding the Revolution to a second half division title and a 6-1 postseason record en route to winning the franchise’s third Atlantic League championship and first since 2011. Mason guided the Revolution to a 76-win season in 2016, the franchise’s third highest win total all-time. It included a personal milestone for Mason, who tied his predecessor, Andy Etchebarren, for the franchise’s all-time wins record with his 237th victory on June 16, 2016, in a 5-3 win at Somerset and surpassed “Etch” with win number 238 the following night, June 17, 2016, in a 6-4 home win vs. Bridgeport. In Mason’s first two seasons with York, the Revs became just the second team in Atlantic League history to win back-to-back championships, doing so in 2010 and 2011. Before his proven success in constructing a roster, Mason served three highly successful years as the club’s pitching coach, amassing a league-best 221-183 record in three seasons. Mason has also produced numerous pitchers whose contracts have been purchased by Major League organizations, eight of whom have gone on to pitch in the Majors. The 2019 season is Mason’s 31st as a coach or manager at either the collegiate or professional level. As a player, Mason pitched in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, ascending as high as Double-A Lynn (MA) of the Eastern League.
Paul Fletcher, Pitching Coach Paul Fletcher enters his sixth season as pitching coach with the York Revolution in 2019, the longest-tenured pitching coach in Revs history. Under Fletcher’s guidance, the Revolution pitching staff has enjoyed great success. His 2017 staff led the Revolution to the third Atlantic League championship in franchise history. Fletcher’s 2016 staff played a key role in that season’s playoff success, as the Revs tallied 76 victories, second most in the league and third-highest total in team history. The 2015 staff ranked second in the league with 1,005 strikeouts, the second most in a season in team history. Fletcher’s hurlers played a large role in the team’s second half turnaround, as well as their success in close contests, as the team went 14-6 in one-run games at home. In 2014, the Revs rolled out their best season as a unit in franchise history. Compiling the second most wins (78) in a season in club history, Fletcher’s staff set a club record for team ERA with a 3.44 mark that also ranked second lowest in the league. The 2014 staff also set club records for fewest hits and walks allowed in a season, lowest opponents’ average (.254), and most saves (42) in a season. Fletcher brings a wealth of experience to the Revolution, having worked in baseball in many capacities throughout the course of his career. That career began in 1992, when he was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 24th round of the Major League draft, after a decorated college career at the University of Tennessee where he was an all-SEC selection in 1991, breaking school records for wins, strikeouts, and innings pitched.

Enohel Polanco, Bench/Third Base Coach Enohel Polanco returns to the Revs for his 10th season on the staff, joining manager Mark Mason as the longest-tenured members of the baseball staff in franchise history. “Polo” made the transition from player to coach during the 2010 season, initially as the club’s first ever player-coach, holding both an active roster spot as an infielder as well as a spot on the coaching staff. During his time in York, he has played a major role both on the field as the team’s third base coach and behind the scenes in helping the club reach the postseason during six of his nine years. The 2010 and 2011 championships marked the first Atlantic League titles of Polanco’s career. He added a third ring with the Revs in 2017. When the Revs landed Polanco, they acquired a respected veteran whose Atlantic League ties run deep. The 2019 season is his 17th in the league, and the Revs are his sixth Atlantic League team. A native of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, Polanco began his professional career in 1995, when he signed with the New York Mets. Primarily a shortstop early on, his 14-year career as a player also took him to the Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, Florida Marlins, and Colorado Rockies farm systems, reaching the Triple-A level with Cleveland and Florida in 2000. In total, he played for 21 different clubs, including seven during the 2000 season alone. Polanco first signed to play in the Atlantic League in 2001 as a member of the Atlantic City Surf, batting .303 that first season. He has also played in the Atlantic League for Nashua, Southern Maryland, Bridgeport, Newark, and York, batting a combined .290 during his time on the circuit.
SANDY DELEON, Bench Coach DeLeon enters his second season as full-time bullpen coach in 2019, having previously worked in the same role for the team on a part-time basis around his coaching and managing schedule on other circuits. DeLeon rejoined York for its 2017 second half and postseason championship run. A veteran of the Atlantic League as a player, DeLeon made the Revs his eighth and final Atlantic League squad during his playing career, as he appeared in 18 games for York during the franchise’s first championship season in 2010, which was DeLeon’s seventh in the Atlantic League as a player. DeLeon was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Seattle Mariners in 1994. His team lost in the Dominican Summer League finals to Enohel Polanco’s Mets squad during his first pro season. DeLeon was traded to the San Francisco Giants for pitcher Salomon Torres in 1995 and played in the Giants farm system from 1995-99. His playing career later took him to the Frontier League in 2000 and the Atlantic League in 2001 when he suited up for four different clubs (BPT, SOM, AC, LV). It was the start of five straight years in the Atlantic League for DeLeon. DeLeon returned to the Atlantic League in 2007 for his third stint with Bridgeport. After time in the United League in 2009, DeLeon was back in the league with York as a member of the championship squad in 2010. He enjoyed two more professional seasons as a player in the Can-Am before moving toward his coaching career. As a coach, DeLeon was an instrumental figure in starting the Empire League and Thoroughbred League while spending time with York on a part-time basis before assuming his current full-time role.

After time in the Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers organizations, Judy returned to York in 2015, going 2-2 with a 2.68 ERA and 12 saves in 53 outings. Judy’s career continued to the Mexican League, where he flashed a 1.20 ERA for Quintana Roo in 2016 before posting a leagueleading 15 saves with a perfect 0.00 ERA in the Dominican Winter League that offseason. James Skelton enters his seventh Atlantic League season with his fifth different club, having played for Somerset, Lancaster, Southern Maryland, and the past three seasons with New Britain. A veteran of 586 ALPB games, Skelton has batted .250 with 40 home runs, 207 RBI, and 92 stolen bases during his Atlantic League time alone. He tied the league record with 101 walks in 2017 and ranked second in on-base percentage (.408) that season. He was originally a 14th round pick of the Detroit Tigers in the 2004 draft and is a career .257 hitter with 62 home runs and 153 stolen bases. Melky Mesa returns after batting .337 with 20 home runs and 89 RBI in 100 games for the Revs in 2018. His average ranked third-highest in the league, just one point shy of the top spot, while also tying the third-highest mark in team history. His 20 home runs placed third on the league leaderboard, while his RBI total ranked second, just two off the league high. Mesa also finished third in runs scored (85) and total bases (221) and tops in extra-base hits (48) and slugging percentage (.577). His slugging established the second-highest clip in a single-season in franchise history. Mesa’s performance during his first season in the Atlantic League earned him a spot on the league’s post-season All-Star team. That honor came after he had already been selected as the Revs’ 2018 team Player of the Year. His batting average was the highest by a Revs hitter in five seasons, and he became the first batter in franchise history to lead the league in extra-base hits.
