coaching staff Mark Mason, Manager Mark Mason enters his sixth season at the helm of the York Revolution in 2018 and 30th year as a coach or manager at either the collegiate or professional level. With 351 victories through his first five years, Mason is the winningest manager in Revolution history. The longest-tenured manager in club history, Mason also enters his ninth overall season on the staff in 2018, matching Enohel Polanco for longest-tenured staff member in club history. The two have been part of 572 combined victories. Mason’s promotion to manager was announced on September 4, 2012, following a highly successful three-year tenure as the club’s pitching coach. Mason orchestrated a dramatic midseason turnaround in 2017, guiding the Revolution to a second half division title and a 6-1 postseason record en route to winning the franchise’s third Atlantic League championship and first since 2011. The 6-1 run through the playoffs established the best postseason mark in Revolution history. Once again fielding arguably the league’s most exciting team, Mason built an offense that paced the circuit with 139 home runs. Mason guided the Revolution to a 76-win season in 2016, the franchise’s third-highest win total alltime. It included a personal milestone for Mason, who tied his predecessor Andy Etchebarren for the franchise’s all-time wins record with his 237th victory on June 16, 2016, in a 5-3 win at Somerset, and surpassed “Etch” with win number 238 the following night, June 17, 2016, in a 6-4 home win vs. Bridgeport. His squad was known for its never-say-die approach, pulling off an incredible team-record 44 come-from-behind victories, eight more than the previous high, including 15 victories when trailing heading to the late innings. Mason also pushed the right buttons in close games, as his team went 4328 in games decided by two runs or fewer and 15-4 in one-run games at home. Overall, York’s home field advantage was the Atlantic League’s best with a 43-27 mark at PeoplesBank Park. Offensively, York bashed 133 home runs, their highest total in four years and the second-highest total in the league. Since Mason’s arrival in 2010, the Revs have had 25 players signed in-season by Major League organizations, 14 of whom have come from Mason’s pitching staffs. Seven of those pitchers and eight total players have made it to the Major Leagues. As a player, Mason pitched in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, ascending as high as Double-A Lynn (MA) of the Eastern League. “Mase” also pitched at Waynesburg (Pa.) College, which is now Waynesburg University.

Paul Fletcher, Pitching Coach Paul Fletcher enters his fifth season as pitching coach with the York Revolution in 2018, the longest-tenured pitching coach in Revs history. In 2014, the Revs rolled out their best season as a unit in franchise history. Compiling the second most wins (78) in a season in club history, Fletcher’s staff set a club record for team ERA with a 3.44 mark that also ranked second lowest in the league. The 2014 staff also set club records for fewest hits and walks allowed in a season, lowest opponents average (.254), and for most saves (42) in a season. Three pitchers from Fletcher’s record-setting staff signed with Major League organizations during the 2014 season, while two others signed to pitch in top-level leagues overseas. Fletcher’s professional career began in 1992, when he was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 24th round of the Major League draft, after a decorated college career at the University of Tennessee where he was an all-SEC selection in 1991, breaking school records for wins, strikeouts, and innings pitched. After initially breaking into the pro ranks in the Royals farm system, the left-hander pitched for Ohio Valley of the Frontier League, earning a contract from there with the Chicago White Sox organization. Fletcher later returned to the Frontier League where the former starter pitched for the Springfield Capitals as a closer to cap his five-year playing career, before making the transition to pitching coach with that team in 1997.

Enohel Polanco, Bench/Third Base Coach Enohel Polanco returns to the Revs for his ninth season on the staff, joining manager Mark Mason as the longest-tenured members of the baseball staff in franchise history. “Polo” made the transition from player to coach during the 2010 season, initially as the club’s first ever player-coach, holding both an active roster spot as an infielder as well as a spot on the coaching staff. During his time in York, he has played a major role both on the field as the team’s third base coach and behind the scenes in helping the club reach the postseason during six of his eight years. The 2010 and 2011 championships marked the first Atlantic League titles of Polanco’s career, before adding a third ring with the Revs in 2017. The 2018 season is his 16th in the league, and the Revs are his sixth Atlantic League team. A native of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, Polanco began his professional career in 1995 when he signed with the New York Mets. His 14-year career as a player also took him to the Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, Florida Marlins, and Colorado Rockies farm systems, reaching the Triple-A level with Cleveland and Florida in 2000. In total, he played for 21 different clubs, including seven during the 2000 season alone. Polanco has also been instrumental in the Revolution’s player procurement efforts. 3

a word from the alpb Dear Fans: Welcome to PeoplesBank Park, home of the 2017 Atlantic League Champion York Revolution and one of the top ballparks in minor league baseball. We are honored you have chosen to visit the Revs as we celebrate the Atlantic League’s 21st Championship Season. Over the past decade the Revolution have consistently offered the White Rose City great baseball in an intimate, family-friendly environment – a great opportunity to bond with friends and loved ones. The team constantly strives to improve its ballclub and facilities, all to better serve York fans. Over two million guests will visit PeoplesBank Park and other Atlantic League venues this season. Through the years, we have welcomed over 38 million guests to Atlantic League games to follow some of the best players in the world. More than 900 Atlantic League alumni have joined MLB organizations and the League has sent nearly 150 of those players to the big leagues. Have you noticed Major League Baseball’s introduced pace of play initiatives this year? They were inspired by the actions of the Atlantic League and its players, which resulted in shorter average game times throughout our league. In addition to their extraordinary skill, we hope you note the hustle our players bring to the ballpark every day. Thank you for joining the Revs as they defend their Atlantic League championship. Without you, the Atlantic League would not be minor league baseball’s pre-eminent league. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy the Revolution. With kind regards,

Rick White, President

From the desk of... Many seasons into my tenure in the front office of the Revs, I’ve noticed fans are often very curious to know a wide array of things about why we do what we do, or ask why we don’t do something that they think is an obvious way to better serve our customers, bring in large crowds, or make more money. It’s the basis of questions we deliberate thoroughly to test ideas before we put them into action. Why does this work? Why would someone buy a ticket to this? Why didn’t we think of that?! We also hear a lot of questions asking “why not?” Philosophers have deliberated for years over the relationship between the two. Psychologists work to understand how our experiences shape our attitudes and why we may cautiously ask “why” or why more adventurous souls just figure “why not.” DownTown, York’s great thinker of the 21st century, has seriously considered all the why’s and why not’s and carefully crafted #RevsTime. What on Earth is #RevsTime, you ask? Well, if you have to ask, you haven’t experienced it. You see, the single greatest component of #RevsTime is that when you experience it, you don’t ask why or deliberate why not. You’re just happy. You’re present. Your heart is full, and your mind is off. #RevsTime happens organically, without notice, when the York community comes together to celebrate at PeoplesBank Park. It’s the roar of the crowd, high fives, and fist pumps when we hit a home run. The excitement of a closely contested WellSpan Fruit Race, the smiles of families watching loved ones make a trip around the carousel, the exuberance of a youngster catching a foul ball, or the “ooh’s” and “ahh’s” during firework shows. It’s the triumph of the annual Cancer Survivor Day parade, the Salute to Veterans recognition ceremony, and the Recovery Circle in September. It’s buying tickets to support local nonprofits and little leagues, four-year-olds singing the national anthem, interns working 80-hour weeks to launch their careers, and ushers introducing you to their great-grandchildren. It’s comradery with life-long friends, laughs with newly made acquaintances, and photographs with family members you’ll cherish for years to come. It’s a loose dress code, minimal rules, no deadlines, good ‘ole fashioned fun place to be, centered around the national pastime with cold beer and tasty snacks. Still skeptical? That’s all right. I know it exists because I’ve felt it. Time and time again. I’m often asked why I’m still here after nine years, or “why not go to the ‘big leagues?’” and I can’t help but remember the #RevsTime that made for my personal best days ever: John Kuhn getting out of the car at the All-Star Game in 2011 and Sean Smith’s hop around the bases in 2014 are two of the best goose bump moments I’ve experienced. I still feel the rush of excitement from Telvin Nash’s championship-winning home run last fall. If I try to explain the feeling, I can’t. Blaise Pascal, a French philosopher, once mentioned that, “All of our reasoning ends in surrender to feeling.” Hmm. For all the reasons we entice fans to visit the ballpark, we’ll never be able to explain the best one there is. For some reason, I have a feeling that we’ll never have to. When you feel it, you’ll know why. THIS is #RevsTime.

Real Stories of Hunger Food for Nanna’s Kitchen Writer: Michael Vyskocil Photographer: Eric Forberger

“Nanna’s Kitchen: where grandkids are spoiled” reads a sign hanging in York resident Francine Moore’s kitchen. Raising two grandchildren by herself—one age 9 and the other 17—Moore recognizes the challenge of putting food on the table while living on a fixed income. Some days, weeks, or months are lean. Unexpected repairs around the house and unforeseen expenses can add up. Social Security provides only a portion of what’s needed to cover living expenses. For Moore, the Senior Box Program through the York County Food Bank offers the food support necessary to help older adults like her maximize their fixed incomes. The program provides one box of food per month consisting of items such as canned fruits and vegetables, hot or cold cereal, pasta, canned protein foods, bottled fruit juice, shelf-stable 2 percent milk, and a 2 lb. block of cheese. “I’m grateful for the Food Bank,” she says. “I’m grateful for it because I know about and see the people who stand in line at the Food Bank every Friday for food. I’ve been in that line,” she says. They are the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and single individuals who wait in the rain, snow, sun, cold, and heat to receive the food they need to feed themselves and their families. Walking through the food pantry clearinghouse at the York County Food Bank, Moore’s gaze focuses on the bags, boxes, cans, and containers that line the floor and shelves of the space. She recounts the story of her life, where mistakes were made and choices impacted decisions at critical turning points of her life. She reflects on the children she’s raised and the grandchildren she feeds at the table of “Nanna’s Kitchen.”

“I feed more people than I may know, and I’m blessed because of that,” she says. “When you stop to think about those who are hungry in York County,’ she says, “it’s more than just giving a box of cereal and some canned goods. It’s about people in communities sharing what they have. To whom much is given, much is required.” Live here. Give here. You can help people like Francine Moore feed loved ones, friends, and neighbors in our community. Donate your non-perishable food items in support of Hunger Free Mondays. When you do, you’ll be sharing the gift of love and helping the York County Food Bank fight hunger in York County. York County Food Bank

Hustle and Opportunity Welington Dotel Finds Them in York From Darrell Henry’s interview with Revolution outfielder Welington Dotel on 1350 WOYK, Friday, July 6, 2018

WD: I enjoyed coming to play against York. When Bridgeport was getting ready to throw in the towel, I said, ‘Wow, who am I going to play for?’ and ‘Hopefully I can get picked up by York.’ When Sugar Land picked me up, I said, ‘Well, that’s the job. I have to go over there and do my job.’ When it didn’t work out over there and I heard from York, I said that’s an opportunity and I’m going to sign with York. DH: How long have you know [Revolution batting coach Enohel] Polanco? WD: Since 2015. Great guy. Great coach. He helps us a lot. Darrell Henry: Your first couple of months in York – how much have you enjoyed it? Welington Dotel: I’ve been enjoying it a lot, you know? Because I’m playing with a couple of [former] teammates, and we have a good crew. We’ve been working hard, we’ve been working together, helping each other. That’s great. That makes a good group.

DH: What was home like growing up? WD: I grew up in Santo Domingo.

DH: When you first got here – as you said, you had some teammates from Bridgeport that were already here – did that make it pretty easy to come in that first day? WD: Yeah, definitely. When you go to a team and you already have a teammate there, you’re in the group already. It’s like a brother, a family, you know? DH: We had seen you come into York, obviously, as an opposing player and thought ‘Oh, great, here he is again at the plate. He’s going to hit a bomb or something against us.’ You did some damage when you were with Bridgeport. How much did you enjoy coming into York as a visiting player before you called this your hometown?

‘Let’s hustle and do our job no matter what.’ thursday, July 26 - 6:30pm

DH: You’ve had such a long and productive career. When you think back on it, are there one or two hits that stand out, maybe a big walkoff or a championship win? WD: Last year in Mexico, I had one. It’s awesome. When you get a hit to help your team win the ball game, that’s something you’re going to remember forever. DH: How confident is the [team] in making a run in the second half? WD: I was talking with my teammates and we said forget about the first half. Forget about the past. Let’s hustle and do our job no matter what.

DH: Did you play in sand lots when you were younger? WD: In DR, it’s crazy. We played everywhere. [Laughing] If we found an apple, we hit an apple. If we found a mango, we hit a mango. It was crazy. That was all we did back there. [Baseball] all the time. It was fun. DH: When you came to Seattle, is that when you first came to the U.S.? WD: Yeah, that was my first time on an airplane. I was nervous, but after while I got used to it. Now it’s normal. DH: When we see you come up to the plate, you’ve got the open stance, the hands a little bit lower than a lot of guys do. When did you start hitting like that? WD: Sometimes you have to make adjustments for yourself. Even when your hitting coach tries to help you, you have to believe in yourself and what you’re doing, and you have to trust the process, you know? And that’s what happened to me. I didn’t feel comfortable hitting the high hands. I just dropped them a little bit and tried to get comfortable, to get better movement, to use my hands closer to the inside of my body.

Revolutionary times

This day in york baseball history Revs Time as we know it carries on a great legacy of baseball in York. In our recurring series, Revolutionary Times looks back at some of the pivotal moments from this time in previous seasons.

August 4, 2014

August 8, 2011

August 10, 2014

Stephen Penney sets a club record for longest scoreless streak by a reliever, surpassing the previous mark of 18.1 innings (Sean Stidfole, 2010). Penney’s record would eventually reach 20.2 innings.

The Revs achieve a milestone, earning the 300th win in franchise history with a 10-4 victory over the Somerset Patriots at then Sovereign Bank Stadium.

Rommie Lewis takes over the Revs’ alltime lead in saves with his 32nd in a York uniform, closing out a 5-4 win over Long Island.

August 5, 2009

August 8, 2016

August 11, 2013

The Revs tie the largest comeback in team history in a 10-8 win vs. New Britain in front of 6,731 fans at PeoplesBank Park. York trailed 8-1 early but completed the comeback on Jared Mitchell’s 3-run double with two outs in the 8th. Mike DeMark tied the club’s single-season saves record with his 28th, a night before breaking that record and tying the franchise’s career record.

The Revs win the Community Cup for the first time since 2010 with a 6-4 victory over the Barnstormers at then Sovereign Bank Stadium, earning their 11th win of the season series with three meetings still remaining.

After nearly three years at the helm and 162 victories, Chris Hoiles, the first manager in franchise history, steps down from his post. The Revs defeat the Camden Riversharks, 3-1, in Sam Snider’s first game as interim manager.

August 5, 2015 Andres Perez notches his 400th hit with the Revs on his 45th career home run with York, tying Scott Grimes for second on the club’s all-time HR list in a 6-5 win vs. Southern Maryland.

August 6, 2008 The Revolution captures its 100th win in style, downing Newark 6-3 on Aaron Rakers’ complete game effort. The Revs wear purple jerseys, benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters.

August 6, 2009

August 9, 2007 Tike Redman returns to the Majors with the Baltimore Orioles as the only player to play in both the Atlantic League and the Majors in 2007. He finishes the season batting .318 in 40 games for the Orioles. In Bridgeport, Frank Castillo fires eight shutout innings in a 1-0 win.

August 10, 2008

August 12, 2008 Chris Ashby ties the Atlantic League hitting streak record with a first inning single, marking his 27th consecutive game with a hit. Matt Dryer’s two-run double in the bottom of the 8th helps the Revs come back to beat Southern Maryland, 3-2.

August 12, 2009 Andy Etchebarren is officially named manager of the York Revolution.

Dave Veres finishes his illustrious career, saving all three games as the Revs sweep Camden, winning 3-2.

The Revs match the biggest inning in club history scoring 9 runs in the fourth, but it takes 12 innings to finish a wild 11-10 victory over the Riversharks, who out-hit York 20-10. Tom Collaro’s 10th inning homer re-ties it, and P.J. Rose’s bases loaded sac fly wins the game in the 12th.
