AbstractAbstract
[en] The various photonuclear reactions suitable for analytical purposes, their specificity and their performances are reviewed. The influence of the experimental irradiation conditions on the theoretical detection limits permitted and on the relative importance of competitive nuclear reactions liable to interfere is examined, with special reference to the determination of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen. It is shown that these parasitic effects of nuclear origin may be eliminated by the choice of the maximum irradiation energy. Examples are given of applications relative to trace determinations of light elements, especially carbon, nitrogen and oxygen, in metals or semi-conductors and to instrumental multi-element analyses of biological materials, atmospheric sampling filters and above all agricultural products
[fr]

AbstractAbstract
[en] The principal means of activation, their respective potential performance and their preferential fields of application are briefly reviewed. The possibilities offered by charged particles and gamma photons where the determination of light elements or of other impurities is concerned, in pure substances, are discussed. Examples, relating to the evaluation of boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen or fluorine levels in metals (Na, Al, Ti, Ni, Cu, Zr, Mo, Ta, W, Pb, etc.), in alloys (PbCuTe, PbSnCd) and in semiconductors (Si, AsGa, InP, etc.) are presented. Where some of these products are concerned, the results obtained by nuclear methods are compared with the values provided by other analytical techniques. The superiority of the first, when the concentration levels of these impurities are less than 1 μg.g-1, is clearly apparent
[fr]

AbstractAbstract
[en] The possibilities offered by the nuclear reactions: 12C(p,γ)13N; 14N(p,γ)15O; 13C(p,γ)14N; 15N(p,αγ)12C to estimate the isotopic concentration ratios 13C/12C, 15N/14N or 15N/12C were studied experimentally. Two kinds of gamma detector (Ge(Li) and NaI(Tl)) were used. It is evident that in view of its resolution the former is more discriminating (separation of neighbouring lines), but our results show that the use of a large NaI(Tl) detector is necessary when large batches of samples have to be examined quickly

AbstractAbstract
[en] The irradiation conditions, nuclear reactions and chemical separation methods used for determining C, N and O traces in metals and semiconductors are described. The results obtained are discussed: determination of C and O in alkali metals; determination of N and O in refractory metals; determination of C, N and O in various metals and semiconductors. In certain cases, the resultas obtained by gamma or charged particle activation analysis are compared with those obtained by other analysis methods

AbstractAbstract
[en] Carbon and nitrogen are determined by the following nuclear reactions: 12C(γ,n)11C and 14N(p,α)11C. The performances of the method and the main interferences are considered. The process developed for the separation of carbon-11 from zirconium is described and its efficiency evaluated. The results obtained are compared with those given by different laboratories using various analytical techniques
