Hand-Sand the Curves - Sand curved surfaces—and other areas an electric sander can't reach—by hand. Treat all areas equally, using the same progression of sandpaper grits for both hand and power sanding. Start with 80-grit to sand away blemishes, then use 120-grit and finally 180-grit. Using these exact grits isn't vital (100-150-180 works too), but it's important to progress in steps, removing deeper scratches and leaving finer scratches each time. Removing varnish from wood can be taxing because the materials used can be puzzling. Know what grit sandpaper to remove varnish from wood.

I have tried many processes and although it may not be the fastest, it always gives the best look. -Day 1: Sand 80,120, and 180 grit. Vacuum and wipe surface with a tack cloth. Do not use mineral spirits. Do not use a pre-conditioner. Stain the wood with a white wash. Here I am using Varathane. -Day 2: Let the white wash dry for 24 hours and then stain the piece using the color you want. Here I am using Kona by Varathane. -Day 3: Apply a polycrylic or polyurethane. Apply it slow. Do not shake the can. Less bubbles mean less work in the following days. You can use a brush, foam brush, or sprayer to apply. -Day 4: Sand the polycrylic LIGHTLY. You do not want to sand through that first coat.
