Pieces written for violetta ⟨IMSLP:View Genres [#6133]

The violetta is not listed as an instrument at IMSLP. It should be! See this example of a piece written for violetti soli. http://imslp.org/wiki/Concerto_for_2_Violas,_TWV_52:G3_%28Telemann,_Georg_Philipp%29

Bach, also, sometimes specifies the violetta, I believe.

Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber wrote also a "Balletae a 4 violettae ..."

Which pieces does Bach specify the violetta in? Just out of curiosity... And yes, it should be added if it hasn't been already. :)

God bless!

just so long as no one uses the violetta tag when they mean (Stelzner's) violotta. (Edit: Ritter created the "viola alta"; the "violotta" takes a sort of tenor cello range and was created by Alfred Stelzner- see Krug's sextet, for example, which has been recorded with a string quintet in A for violotta and string quartet (published only very recently, and not likely to be PD) by Felix Draeseke.))

A difficult to answer question when so many of Bach's works exist first in scribal copies. Cantata 16 is often listed as including "oboe da caccia (violetta)"* but the manuscript score mentioned at Bach Digital mentions only "oboi" on its title page (perhaps the more specific instruments are, as often with mss as opposed to good published scores, mentioned only within.)

* According to published recent editions, "Soli (ATB), Chor (SABT), Corno da caccia, 2 Oboen, Oboe da caccia (Violetta), 2 Violinen, Viola und Basso continuo".

(Actually, the 1890 B&H has Am Feste der Beschneidung Christi Für Soli: A, T, B; Chor: S, A, T, B; Corno da caccia; Ob. I, II; Viol. I, II; Vla. und Violetta; Cont., so not just more recent editions, but still, recent compared to 1750.)
