Twenty-five years ago, a tragic event claimed the lives of 31 Merchant Marines, and the Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue Swimmer Program was conceived to prevent such disasters from ever happening again. The program has been a guardian angel to many fates nearly taken by the sea.

Before dawn on March 23, 2008, the Alaska Ranger ship sank in America's deadliest waters. As 47 souls fought for survival, the Coast Guard launched one of the most daring and dramatic rescues in history.

Two people were rescued from a sinking 80-foot yacht off the Florida coast. The U.S. Coast Guard swiftly responded to the distress call received late Monday night. The yacht was located 20 miles east of Fort Pierce Inlet, Florida. A rescue team, including a helicopter crew and a Response Boat-Medium crew, was dispatched immediately.
