Wright lahir pada tanggal 7 Desember 1965, di Washington, D.C., putra dari Barbara Evon Whiting-Wright, seorang pengacara bea cukai, dan James Charles Wright Jr., yang meninggal ketika Jeffrey masih kecil.[1][2] Dia lulus dari Sekolah St. Albans dan kuliah di Amherst College, menerima gelar sarjana dalam ilmu politik, berencana untuk masuk sekolah hukum, tetapi memilih untuk belajar akting. Setelah mengikuti program akting MFA di New York University Tisch School of the Arts selama dua bulan pada tahun 1988, ia keluar untuk tampil di Les Blancs di Arena Stage sebelum pindah ke Huntington Theatre Company dan memutuskan untuk menjadi aktor penuh waktu.[3][4]
