I have used numerous dough recipes but this is one I found in my mom's recipe cards not long ago and I have decided it's my favourite. Very soft and flaky, hold together well and bakes up beautifully. Ingredients for dough: 5 6/8 cups flour, (I find that 6 cups is too much, so take away several tablespoons and you should have it right) 1 1/2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 1…

If you grew up in Kansas or one of our neighboring states you are most likely familiar with Bierocks or otherwise known as Runzas in our northern neighboring state of Nebraska. They are one of my favorites. I'm a big fan of cabbage. You can always find them at our County Fairs here in the sunflower state. Growing up they were always on the school cafeteria menu. Heck, even our High School Juniors usually have them for sale for a prom fund raiser every year in our small town. They are said…

Oh, the memories of this recipe! This is a favourite Mennonite Tradition for a summer meal. This is my mom's favourite recipe for Roll Kuchen. I remember fondly the time my parent's spent making this and how they doubled and tripled the recipe for family gatherings. To non-Mennonites the idea of having these with watermelon strikes them as very strange--Watermelon and doughnuts??!!?? But for me and my family it is a food that we enjoy and look forward to having! Cook time is per batch of 4-6…

Mennonite Girls Can Cook: Pfeffernuesse (Peppernuts) Mennonite Baking, Peppernuts Recipe, Pennsylvania Dutch Recipes, Mennonite Girls Can Cook, Anise Oil, Mennonite Recipes, Amish Recipes, Dutch Recipes, Pennsylvania Dutch

Christmas is around the corner and it's time to be thinking of making Pfeffernuese. This is a great recipe to make with a friend. It takes half the time and is twice the fun. There's a bit of history to these tiny spiced cookies. I remember being told that Mennonite grandmothers used to keep a few peppernuts in their purses during church services. When the children would become a bit noisy or restless, they would pop one of these hard nuggets into their mouths and the necessity of sucking…
