Kasteel Rouge is aptly named for it’s deep, dark red color brought on by the addition of sour cherries to a base of brown ale, which is then left in the barrel for a six month period. This ale will surprise many with the sour of the cherries and the 8% alcohol level. Great with a BBQ, to accompany a dessert or simply as an outstanding real ale. Beer 365- #38 Kasteel Rouge I'm not much for fruit beers but this one is different, at least for me. This Belgian ale is brewed with cherries then they add a little cherry juice for good measure. As you would expect this ale has a distinct reddish hue and an aroma of fresh cherries. The flavor is rich and dense with again cherry being the predominant flavor, hints of cinnamon and spice peak through so that the cherry isn't overwhelming. Wheatwines are a fun twist on barleywines, using a large portion of wheat malt rather than just barley. The result is a big, boozy beer with a smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Like barleywines, wheatwines have high alcohol, usually 8-12% ABV. But they tend to be lighter in color, more golden hued. The wheat brings notes of bread crust, grain, and citrus. There are still bold hops for balance, lending tropical or stone fruit flavors.
