Cat at the Temple of Philae, Egypt

Ancient Egyptians believed cats had magical powers. Wealthy families hung jewelry and ornaments on their cats and dressed them in expensive clothes. They would treat cats just as they did pharaohs. If the cat died, it was embalmed.

This facsimile painting copies a scene in the tomb of Sennedjem (TT 1) at Deir el-Medina in western Thebes. The cat killing the serpent is associated with Chapter 17 in the Book of the Dead.
