Café Brulot Diabolique, or “Devilishly Burned Coffee,” was invented at Antoine’s Restaurant in the late 1880s by Jules Alciatore, the son of the restaurant’s founder. According to Phillip Collier’s Mixing New Orleans, Alciatore was inspired by French bon vivants who would drown a sugar cube in Cognac and place it over an open flame before extinguishing it in a cup of hot coffee.

I miss the days when dining in fine restaurants included something flambéed, flaming or being set on fire. This recipe is a very impressive end to a special meal.

Our simplified version of the flaming coffee cocktail served at Arnaud's in New Orleans uses strong black coffee spiced with whole cloves.

This has all the "Ooooooh" factor you could want! The aroma from the aromatics fills the room with citrus and cinnamon. The flaming of the peel is a vision to behold--dim the lights. And the taste, of course, is wonderful.
