Aswan dam

Abu Simbel is an archaeological site located in southern Egypt. The site is home to two massive temples that were built by the pharaoh Ramses II. The temples were originally located on the banks of the Nile River, but they were relocated in the 1960s to save them from being flooded by the Aswan High Dam.

Aswan High Dam, rock-fill dam across the Nile River at Aswan, Egypt, completed in 1970 at a cost of about $1 billion. The dam impounds the annual floodwaters of the Nile, releasing them when needed to maximize their utility on irrigated land. It also generates hydroelectric power.

One of the beauties of the Nile is the Aswan Dam and the artificial lake that it generates: Lake Nasser. Although the dam has caused a not inconsiderable environmental impact, the view, especially from above, is breathtaking. Strongly desired by Nasser to solve the problem of drought, Egypt at the time was one of the driest countries in the world, it made it possible to cultivate miles and miles of desert.

The Buhen fortress was most probably constructed during the rule of Senusret III in around 1860 BCE (12th Dynasty). Senusret III conducted four campaigns into Kush and established a line of forts within signalling distance of one another; Buhen was the northern most of these.

The relocation of the temples was necessary as they would have been submerged during the creation of Lake Nasser formed after the building of the Aswan Dam on the Nile River.
