Istilah garis salju terdiri dari dua pengertian. Pengertian pertama disebut "garis salju iklim", yaitu batas antara permukaan yang dilapisi oleh salju dengan permukaan yang bebas salju. Garis salju iklim dapat berubah-ubah tergantung pada musim. Sementara itu, pengertian yang kedua adalah garis salju permanen, yaitu ketinggian tertentu yang saljunya tidak pernah cair pada musim panas atau musim kemarau.
