Crochet Foundation Curls are quick and easy to make in this tutorial by Nastasia. They are made using the technique of Foundation Crochet where a chain is made and then the double crochet stitches are made and then another chain is made, the double crochet, another chain, and so on. With this method, the curl can be made any length without guessing how many starting chains are needed. I'm using worsted weight yarn and a size K crochet hook. To begin, start with a slipknot and then make a chain four loosely. It helps if that first chain is made as loosely as possible. The remaining chain three serves as the first double crochet stitch. Now I'm making another double crochet stitch in that very first chain. If possible try to go under two loops of that chain when making the stitches. And that is made easier if the initial starting chain four chains are made loosely. This now equates to two double crochet stitches in the first chain. And finally I'll begin a other double crochet stitch but before I finish it, I'm making a chain one to prepare for the next set of double crochet stitches while at the same time finishing this third double crochet stitch. Now, I have to try and remember exactly where that chain one that I made before finishing the last double crochet is. I'll be going underneath both loops of it to create a more secure foundation curl. So, going forward, this is the pattern. Make one double crochet under both loops of that previous chain one stitch and now make a second double crochet stitch in that previous chain one stitch and always on the third double crochet we yarn over and start the double crochet stitch like usual however we make a chain one in there first to prepare for the next set of stitches and then we finish the last and third double crochet stitch repeat this pattern again remember where that chain one stitches and begin first double crochet stitch preferably under both loops of that chain one stitch and then make another double crochet stitch in the same chain one stitch finally prepare to make the third and final double crochet stitch but be sure to also get a chain one in there before finishing the third double crochet stitch so we have a chain one ready for our next set of double crochet stitches now how this is different from the regular way we generally make curls is this. Normally, we'll start with the chain 20 and then we usually do three double crochet stitches in each chain to form curls. The problem is by chaining 20 up front, sometimes the curl is too long. Other times it is too short. So, by making curls from the bottom up as we go, we can easily make this any length as we go. Instead of trying to figure out the length up front. If interested, I like taking a smaller hook with size ten metallic thread and connected along the top of the initial chain three from the previous row and going in the same direction as the first row, I make two single crochet stitches in each stitch to form a nice edge along the curls. This is of course optional. Any kind of yarn and thread can be used including gold, silver, white, black, or a darker or lighter color to match the first row. Novelty yarn can be used as well to create a fun border. And that's it. That's how I crochet foundation curls.
