John Merrick was a disfigured man who lived in Victorian London. The cause of his deformities was a serious case of Proteus Syndrome. He worked in a freakshow for a while billed as "The Elephant Man" which is the name most people remember him by today.

Sir John Hurt, the two-time Oscar nominated star of the Elephant Man, has died at the age of 77, his agent confirmed on Saturday. He is survived by his wife Anwen Rees-Myers and his two sons.
