Happy New Year!

I’ve been so detached and out of it that I totally forgot to even mention that I signed up for an exchange, so this is me remedying that now. There are still some giftless trees at [community profile] fandomtrees, so if you would like to help out you can find the spreadsheet of trees here. The goal is for everyone to have at least two gifts and gifting lasts until January 8, with the reveals being on January 10 (or once everyone has two gifts).

Oh, and here’s my tree: https://fandomtrees.dreamwidth.org/216620.html No idea what happened with the formatting there, but it gives it room to breathe, don’t you think? lol

[ *dj khaled voice*: another one ]

Almost immediately after finishing work on my first garage kit, the red bunny, and vowing to never touch an airbrush again and sell all my untouched kits to save them from my incompetence, I began work on another kit. (I’m in an on-off-relationship with almost all my crafting hobbies, so this is normal.)

Two or three photos in this post are horrifically grainy because I messed up the ISO settings on my camera while unboxing. I apologize in advance to your eyes.

Back in 2022, if you were interested in the Chinese scale figure market or non-ero OC figures, you might have come across the prototypes for a set of 1/7 scale figures by then brand-new manufacturer Fluo: Platonica and Luminoustar.

(To skip my rambling and get to the review keep scrolling until you see photos. TL;DR rating is way down at the end.)

Sometimes I get myself overwhelmed by the most nonsensical things. For some reason, my brain will file certain enjoyable activities under responsibilities it needs to fear and avoid, which is also why I will sometimes drop off the face of the earth for friends, family, and the various online communities I haunt. Last year wasn’t a good one for me mental health wise and a lot of nice things fell under the radar, but life is slowly improving and I’m trying to pick up where I left off.

That brings me to Honey, Honey by slimeaudit.

This fic has been in my backlog for months because I wanted to be able to… feel joy again, I guess, before I read it. Yesterday, I decided, was the day and goddamn I feel like reading it last December would have cured my depression instantly. Okay, maybe that’s a bit much, but oh my god, does it hit the spot. Honey/Molina is honestly the luckiest rarepair ship I’ve ever had because while we only have a few fics I’m blessed by the density of in-character, well-written stories that also match a ton of my headcanons/personal fanon. How amazing is that?

I ended up spamming a bunch of half-coherent comments under Honey, Honey that I hope won’t bother the author and I’m honestly frustrated with myself for depriving myself of it for almost a year. Although, if I’m realistic I really wasn’t in the right headspace to truly enjoy it like I do now and part of the frustration comes from not having been able to express my appreciation to the author when they posted their fics—oh yeah, plural. I don’t even know if they’re still around or interested in the ship.

The sucky part about tiny fandoms is that great stuff flies under the radar and doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

Well now I’ve made myself sad, lol. Anyways, you shoud read slimeaudit’s Wolf fics, because they are very good and will not make you sad.

I was at a social event last the weekend (everybody please clap) and caught a cold I’m still recovering from, so this’ll be short.

I really love Project Gutenberg and will occasionally browse one if its categories and download whatever seems interesting (ebook of the Epic of Gilgamesh in the original cuneiform, anyone?). Quite a few Gutenberg ebooks come with default covers that can only be described as… visually confounding. A screenshot of books on Project Gutenberg. The covers center presumably randomly generated combinations of shapes in bright primary and secondary colors. The clashing color combinations and oddly squished-looking font are particularly fascinating to me. But I like that they have covers at all. Anyways, being the visual creature that I am, I like to make time to create my own covers for these books. Here are a few of them:

holyscream: Iwan Rheon as Molina peeking into the icon frame, captioned, “Me waiting for a new entry on IMDB.” (rheon)

I have two basic rules for posting images online:

One:
Downscale to biggest displayed size x2 to accommodate HiDPI screens.

Two:
No image gets published without proper alt text.

The only times I’ll budge on these are when platform restrictions apply, like MFC’s BB code not allowing alt text or Dreamwidth not serving 200px icons for HiDPI screens. But while I love image editing, writing image descriptions of any kind or length has always felt like pulling teeth. As a result, I have a bunch of graphics-based posts sitting in my files simply because I’m often too lazy to start/get overwhelmed while writing their resprective alt texts and IDs.

All that preamble is to say: This is one of those posts, so it’s more than a year out of date.

And what exactly is “this”? I’m still not sure what to call it but on my computer the related files are saved in a folder called “IRR”—Iwan Rheon Retrospective.
There’s a joke in there to be made about how the German word “irr(e)” means crazy…

At some point in 2022 I realized that through my regular rewatches of the Ramsay Bolton themed Game of Thrones supercut I’d made (I literally had the video files on my phone to bring with me everywhere) I had managed to acquire an almost Pavlovian reflex of happiness to the actor portraying him. I’ve never really been a fan of an actor before—the closest I ever came was making viewing/listening decisions based on voice actor casting—so since this was new ground I thought it would be fun to go through Iwan Rheon’s IMDB page and watch as much of it as possible.

holyscream: A drawing of a vampire by artist GyaGa next to a matching color card. (icon)
A misaligned pixelated image of Son Goku in his Super-Saiyajin Blue form, overlayed with rainbow comic sans text, reading, “super cyan.”

I slipped this guy into the Rainbow Pass-It-On with one hour left to spare on the timer (and a visitor due any minute), which means I hit the 16 icon limit. Yay for spam! 🙌🏽 FYI, number 15 was an icon of Xie Xing, the 10k Escape Plans gyaru leopard, so I even managed to do an icon related to figure collecting. Chibi illustration of a blonde girl winking under her sunglasses and giving the finger. Yay for organized hoarding! 🙌🏽

Thing is though… I have to make a confession. A confession of stolen valor, because I… am not a Dragonball fan.

In fact, I have never seen a single episode or read a single chapter. My knowledge of this seminal multimedia work is entirely based on pop culture osmosis.

I am a fraud. A swindler. A disgrace.

In all seriousness though, I always feel awkward about making pop culture references I’m not directly familiar with, but the pull of a bad joke just waiting to be made is simply too strong for me to resist. I was so mad when I googled “goku super saiyajin” and saw he already had a Bunsen burner form—turns out this dude has more power up levels than a Winx Club fairy, my god—meaning I didn’t have to/wouldn’t get to give him a shitty bucket fill dye job anymore.

I kind of wish I’d deep-fried Goku a bit more; looking at him with fresh eyes makes me think he does not have enough sharpening artefacts.

I’m still new to graphics/icon posting etiquette on Dreamwidth, but I noticed the prevalence of dedicated communities for certain types of content, so I made myself my own graphics comm; [community profile] grphxscream. Montage of the sad jester in holyscream’s icon holding a screenshot of a journal layout. Garish rainbow-colored text reads, “Welcome to the world baby grphxscream.dreamwidth.org.”

The first thing I did was obviously restructuring the journal layout with CSS grid and then writing a bunch of extra styling because I simply can’t help myself, lol.

It is a good sign at least that I can still find joy in playing with HTML and CSS like this. For a couple of months, I feared the burnout had completely killed my interest in all things webdev and I might even have to look for work in a new industry. But let’s not ruin the fun with talk of work and illness!

I’ve been trying out “portable” (inline CSS) gimmicky presentation styles for icon sets, like bingos and such. One is a grid styled like a bingo sheet and I thought I’d finished it when I realized that Dreamwidth doesn’t allow position: absolute; for inline styling. I do get why, but now I have to rethink my bingo layout idea.

However, that extra thinking made me realize the old layout doesn’t even work conceptually like I wanted it to, so… silver linings, I guess.
