Hello all! It’s been a while, but I’ve finally managed to squeeze in some hobby time here and there — and I’m excited to share a brand-new warband of deranged, dangerous, and righteously unhinged characters.
A little while back, I made a pact with myself: I have more than enough plastic and resin to tackle any project I can imagine, so I vowed not to buy anything new… at least for now! 😄 With that in mind, I dove into my mountain of grey sprues with the sole purpose of kitbashing a fresh warband for The Daemon Ink, the narrative project I started years ago during lockdown.
The Daemon Ink was (and still is) a massive undertaking. I currently have three unfinished boards for it, and I’m determined to see them completed — and hopefully get some games played on them too. Progress stalled because I moved house and still haven’t set up a workspace big enough to handle the terrain.
In the meantime, though, this new warband has been a great way to reignite my inspiration and motivation. These are just a few WIP shots of the completed characters — paint jobs and lore will follow soon!
Of all the factions for fantasy/AOS that GW do Vampires and the undead are my favourite. Over the past few years I have been collecting and painting characters and war bands to play in various skirmish games but now, I think, it was about time I started to create an army. This will include all the models I’ve painted so far, plus the ones still buried in one of my many draws of shame. The painting of them should be fairly quick I think because I’ve got a method that works well and a very desaturated palette so the amount of variation is limited.
This is what I have so far. Very war band driven projects so I’d think you’d agree I need a bunch of skeletons and Zombies to flesh 😉 the army out.
When my parents last visited me from Perth WA, they brought with them a wonderful surprise. What I unwrapped was many old painted mini’s from my teen years. These were the ones that got left behind when I moved to London all those years ago and it was a lovely walk down memory lane for me. I found myself looking at models I’d forgotten I even painted or converted and the bright painting style so far removed from what I produce today. So I thought I’d share with you all a few photo’s of my blast from the past and can highly recommend you all go dig deep into your past and find the hidden gems of fond memories buried away in a box somewhere, in a loft or at the bottom of a dusty cupboard. You never know what you might find.
Having backed the original kickstarter I was very pleased when they decided to make a game out of the success of it. The setting is a grim one and so right up my ally, with many factions ranging from Hell to Antioch already in the lore it has a lot of scope to keep growing and will no doubt do just that. The quality of the production and the team behind it has so far been amazing. The art I’ve seen is glorious and many of you will recognize the artists involved. As for the miniatures they are very well designed and like you can see below print out wonderfully.
So these are the models I chose to start my warband. I went for the Trench Pilgrims as I just love their aesthetic. These models were printed on an 8K Phrozen printer and came out lovely and crisp, which is testament to the designers ability and the quality of the meshes as much to the accuracy of the printer.
Below are some of the models from the first kickstarter that started it all. The colours I’ve chosen for these will be inspiration for the Pilgrims but a lot grimmer!
“You know, my child, you won’t be able to control it forever.”
The Angel, Master and Priest was a project heavily inspired by the Bequin Trilogy by Dan Abnett. I loved the idea of towering angel that suffers from a rage so powerful that it takes a soulless untouchable to tame it and when she calls it to her it is with her own blood. Very cool stuff. So for my Angel I decided to make it a creature of the warp but not the usual Daemon type, instead it is more mournful, sorrow filled entity that cries tears of blood and seems to feel the pain of others. The violence it can unleash though is terrible and it’s use drives it deeper into pain and sadness, causing the hold over this strange entity to wane and one day it will break. Who knows what will happen when it finally does and can the Master and Priest deal with it or be forever damned and consumed by it’s power.
So I’ve embarked on a Space Hulk mission! The mission being to paint models to use in Space Hulk! I have many fond memories of Space Hulk and it is by far the game I played the most in my early hobby days. A few editions later and they’ve finally released some Terminators that are a proper size, so I thought I’d paint a few squads, and a bunch of the new Genestealers to go with the recent edition of the game. My progress so far is a follows.
Being a long time fan of the Space Vampires I was over joyed with the release of the some of the new models for the Blood Angel range, especially Astorath the Grim. Probably my favourite Space Marine character I think they did a marvellous job in his reimagining, with my only gribble being that his face isn’t as good as the original. In the future I may have a go at converting the new model to address this but in the meantime I have painted up the new one straight out of the box.
As you can see I’ve gone for a different take on his colour scheme. I wanted him to be darker and menacing, a baroque shadow of death that you never see coming. Cold and ancient with the weight of his dark purpose clinging to him whilst he delivers the killing or executing strike.
For those who are interested shown below are the paints I used to create the metallic black and bronze of his armour. The model was first primed using Chaos Black and then a dusting spray of Leadbelcher.
To accompany Astorath I have started painting up some Death Company marines. I’ve only finished five so far but the complete squad will consist of ten models. I then have plans to do a squad of five with jump packs and assorted weapons.
These guys are fairly quick to paint as I want them to look battered by war and splattered with blood as they go to their end in a slaying frenzy. In the next post I will do a how to guide for their paint scheme.
” The oaths were broken. The curse set in. The damned rose triumphant and revelled in their sin. “
SOH LASH. The Compulsive Prince of the Twisted Fortress. Lord of Flayed Delight. Prince of the Bladed Cross.
” We once thought as you do. Such stunted vision. So much in this tainted, blissful universe is ripe and dripping with potential. Why shut yourself off from such pleasures, after all, life is short is it not? Well for you it is. If only you embraced the truth and set yourself free. MMMMM! I’m not complaining though, you will taste that much more sweeter. Fear has a flavour you know. “
A little visual insight to the modelling process. It was a really fun character to create and the pieces just seemed to go together so well. The vision I had for it was almost exactly what I modelled and the paint job was an experiment with some different paints I recently got. The metal effect of his armour was achieved by using pearl paints, with thinned down shades of red and purple glazed in areas. It was then highlighted with a chrome silver paint. The base is a 3D print.
“What is victory? Victory is not just to win and watch your foe limp from the battlefield. No. Victory is the total annihilation of your opponent. Everything and everyone they love, everywhere they’ve been and everyone they’ve influenced. All must be eradicated for you to have victory. Anything short of this and you invite retaliation. In our line of work this must never happen.
We find ourselves on this world because those that claim power over it have strayed from the light. The population they lord themselves over is down trodden and hope is fading fast. Opposition to the rule is quickly stamped out and it’s not done quietly either, the Government seem to think their power is absolute and no one can touch them. They have become drunk on their own greed and corruption, seeing themselves as gods whose words and actions can send millions into destitution. Caring not about the population that ultimately supports them they are power mad and evil. This my trusted friends must be stopped.
We will do what we always do and use whatever means necessary to accomplish our goals and ensure our victory. This world will come back into the fold and will once again prosper for the better of the Imperium as every world is a precious resource that the Imperium can ill afford to loose.
Our duty is clear. Total victory or death.”

This ticks off my first completed Inq28 warband for this year. It’s a pretty good feeling getting something completed this early in the year and I hope it sets the pace for the rest of it. Keeping the palette muted is a big factor in this and it’s a way I will probably paint many of my projects that follow.
Many people have asked me how I did the white so I’m going to share that with you here. It’s mostly drybrushing, which also adds to the speed in which I can get things done.
