English: During Ramadan, Muslims observe fasting from dawn until sunset, which means they abstain from food, drink, smoking, and other physical needs during the daylight hours. The pre-dawn meal is called suhoor, and the meal that breaks the fast at sunset is called iftar. Muslims usually break their fast together with family, friends, and the community.
Besides fasting, Muslims also increase their prayers and recitation of the Quran, the holy book of Islam. Many mosques and Islamic organizations offer special programs and events during Ramadan, such as nightly Tarawih prayers, which are extra prayers that are performed after the Isha prayer.
