Patchwork stitching

In today's world of disposable fashion, we are seeing a resurgance of the art of mending to repair and embellish our clothing.

I've taken a lot of pictures of vintage Crazy Quilts, but not very many modern day interpretations. I was especially happy to see 2 contemporary CQ versions at the Arizona Quilters Guild show. All Creatures Large and Small by Gerlinde Hruzek won First Place in the "Other" category. This artist used so many mediums in the making of her quilt: Needlepoint, embroidery, applique, crochet and ribbon work to name a few. Made this one in the spring and then as I often find myself doing, added onto it later.

As I scrolled through Instagram on my phone while I had breakfast (we all do that, right?) I saw that @berry_birdy had put out a fun new challenge. Each May, Lesley hosts the Micro Mini Stitch Along #microminisal where we get to play and create little quilts, no bigger than 8" square. The challenge set yesterday was called "Treasure from Trash". We were to use only scraps that were in our bin. Fun! As my sewing room bin was emptied the day before for bin night, I had quite limited scraps…

I love boro stitching. I love the feel of pulling thread through cloth. I love the 'rule-less-ness' of it, and the minimalism of it. I love picking bits of cloth for their colours and textures and then stitching them together until I have a new big piece of fabric. Scrap fabrics, a needle, some thread, that's it.
