Joe Thompson on Instagram: "How to get smooth bottoms without a lot of sanding. Firstly, don't pick a clay with a lot of course grog. Even if you get the piece smooth at this stage, the grog will add a rough texture when fired. A clay with minimal and/or fine grog will work much better in this regard. Secondly, trim and burnish the clay with a rib at the right level of dryness. You can get an almost glossy shine if you get the timing right (not too wet, not too dry) and this smoothness will remain after the firing. All I do afterwards is a quick pass of 60, 120, and 240 grit @diamondcoretools pads to get the bases buttery smooth. Of course, you can skip the first two points and still sand pieces equally smooth, but it's much easier to smooth out soft clay than fully fired clay! #pot
Looking forward to seeing how this one turns out! We are working on new projects to show you our ribs in action :) . . . 🏷️ #pottery #ceramicstudio #potteryofinsta #potterylife #potterystudio #ceramic #ceramicart #clay #clayartist #potter #ceramicist #clayart #instapotter #potteryofinstagram #wheelthrownpottery #wheelthrown #potterytools #claytools
