This little guy is a hand carved woodland gnome. He is about 3" tall and sports a blue hat. He is approximately 1" wide. He was carved from Basswood and finished with watered down acrylic paint.

Carving is something that is an intensely personal art that is done with the use of a small instrument held in the hand or at best with a chisel and hammer.

Carving lovespoons has its risks. The lovespoon art form has one rule that makes for danger throughout the carving process. The ‘carved from a single piece’ rule means that breakages require re-design or starting over. I have had a fair share ( though it never feels fair ) of these re-starts due to breakages. Quality woodworking has a way of seeming almost fantastical, like an object of art piece straight out of a fantasy movie. But despite the art form’s age, there are still creative people out there, chiseling, sawing, and sanding wood for our benefit.
