Hello all, After Christmas my family went on a weeklong holiday down south. We rented a house large enough to accommodate all 15 of us. It was not what one would call a restful getaway but it was a great bonding time for all of us. We played games, watched old family videos, cooked and ate and cooked and ate and cooked and ate some more. The little girls performed a talent quest and all the kids enjoyed the pool. The weather was not great but there were a couple of days when the beach could…

ROADSIDE IKEBANA: February 2012 Kenzan Ikebana, Elysian Fields, Arreglos Ikebana, Ikebana Sogetsu, Contemporary Flower Arrangements, Sogetsu Ikebana, Ancient Trees, Bay Of Islands, Ikebana Arrangements

In our first week before attending the workshops we travelled to the north of the northern island of New Zealand, including the famous Bay of Islands area. After the workshops I felt I could not leave New Zealand without going to Rotarua, the area that is very geo-thermally active. The geyser called Pohutu was astonishing, the roar of boiling water being shot 20 meters in to the air was really loud. These phenomena are totally bizarre to someone who comes from a part of the world that is not…

While home for Christmas and my winter break, I did something that I still can't quite believe I did. I had my first solo ikebana exhibit! I was home longer than usual this year because I had a nice break from work -- the kids I teach were on winter break. I had casually mentioned to my mom while talking on the phone with her one day that it would be nice to have an exhibit while I was home. I want to emphasize -- casually mentioned. Well, I began to think about it more, she began to think…

This year our annual exhibition was held in the lobby of the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins. This is a very large space which, in addition to having the front desk of the hotel, also functions as gallery for a variety of different types of contemporary art practice. The lobby has very large windows that look into a glass-roofed internal atrium over six stories high. The three large works set on the wide window ledges on the left of this photo were created by teams of ikebanists. This photo is…

Hello all, My aeonium plant (aeonium arboreum 'velour') has grown very big very fast and, because the stems are very soft, pieces have been breaking off. I picked some up and started playing with them. The very simple arrangement, above, still required some expertise to arrange. Firstly, I selected an interesting piece and trimmed away some flowers as well as some of the lower petals from the flowers that I kept. Then I used a stick wedged between the stem and the wall of the vase to hold…
