I use a groggy mid-fire stoneware clay. I use traditional coil, slab and pinch techniques to make my hollow ceramic sculptures. These are techniques that have been used for thousands of years. Coil building is an ancient ceramic process of rolling out “snakes” of clay, placing them in the desired shape, and smoothing them together. I blend my hand rolled coils together using my fingers with a hand inside to support the walls. Stone Anderson on Instagram: "When making coil pots, I always attach the coil of clay to the inside of the rim, rather than right on top. It gives me a better connection between the pot and the coil, helps me compress them together, and it gives me greater control of the form. If I’m building a cylinder, attaching the coil to the interior helps me keep the form growing upward, rather than outward. If I stick the coil directly on top of the rim, I find the pot has a tendency to grow outwards, and it will often develop a thin spot where the coils attach. If you make coil pots and haven’t tried attaching a coil on the inside, I highly recommend giving it a try.
