As a history major, I’ve had to write plenty of research papers over the years. In my very first class where I was expected to research, I was a freshman in a class with all seniors and I felt embarrassed to even ask how I should outline my research paper or what kind of citations to use.

When learning how to research it is easy to think that you will not fall into the trap of using inaccurate information, but the truth is that the vast majority of people only look at the first result when making a google search, and neglect to look any further.

Knowing how to research is an important skill for our students, but it can seem overwhelming and tedious when students first see a research assignment. Check out some of my favorite tips for teaching research in secondary ELA.
