Emily Chen on Instagram: "Why yes. Yes it can be done on dark hair too 🤎 Think of permanent color as a full coverage lipstick, and demi color as tinted lipgloss. Or painted cabinets vs stained cabinets. Permanent color will give you the heaviest coverage, but it’ll also give you the most dramatic regrowth line. Demi offers less coverage, but a more subtle & graceful growout. My client here was sick of having to color her regrowth every 4 weeks, but she wasn’t ready to go full-on grey. Our goal was to get her to a level 6 demi base so that she’s able to stretch her regrowth maintenance visits to 6-8 weeks. Emily Chen on Instagram: "My client was SICK. AND. TIDE. of battling that harsh line. I absolutely LOVE a demi for this exact scenario. The translucency allows for such a soft grow out, and the greys suddenly turn into what looks like “highlights”.

For her new base, we used Goldwell’s REGULAR Colorance (NOT cover plus) 55ml 6N, 5ml 6A + 60ml 2% lotion (7vol)

We did pop in some highlights as well & toned w/ SEQ 8VG, 9VG, 9P, 7P

I chose regular colorance over cover plus bc we’re going for zero lift & thus, zero exposed warmth in her base. There is nothing wrong w/cover plus which is mixed w/ 10vol - it offers a bit more coverage, but it will leave a stronger demarcation line than regular + 7vol and also shift the base slightly adding a touch of warmth.

As many of you know by now, one of my favorites is using a deposit-only Demi to grey-blend as an alternative to permanent color when possible. This offers a more dimensional result, zero underlying warmth (never fades “brassy”), and an ultra soft grow out for my low-maintenance queens. When I do this, I like to formulate about one shade lighter than the natural base to create a “highlighted” effect, and add warmth since there is NO underlying warmth in the grey we’re applying it over.
