Rolex on haluttu ja arvostettu tuotemerkki
Rolex Daytona (malli 116520)

Historia

Yhtiön perusti saksalainen Hans Wilsdorf 1905[6] Lontoossa nimellä Wilsdorf and Davis. Yhtiö toimi maahantuojana ja hankki kellokoneistot sveitsiläiseltä Hermann Aeglerilta, mutta suunnitteli itse kotelot. Rolex-tuotemerkki patentoitiin 1908.[7] 1919 yhtiö muutti Englannin korkeiden tuontitullien vuoksi[8] pääkonttorinsa Geneveen, jolloin nimeksi tuli Montres Rolex SA. Wilsdorf keskittyi varhaisessa vaiheessa kaukonäköisesti rannekelloihin, vaikka taskukellot olivat vielä 1920-luvulla yleisempiä. 1931 yhtiö kehitti gravitaatioon ja käyttäjän käden liikkeeseen perustuvan Rotor-mekanismin, josta kehittyi Perpetual-automaattikoneisto.[9]

  1. Davis Cup, haettu 19.6.2008 "Rolex’s commitment to tennis started in 1978 when the luxury brand became the “Official Watch” of Wimbledon. This date marks the beginning of a privileged relationship between two partners driven by the same pursuit of excellence and prestige."
  2. Australian Open, haettu 19.6.2008 "In 2008, the Australian Open will welcome Rolex as a tournament partner, in the role of official timekeeper. The leading name in luxury wrist watches, Rolex has been the pre-eminent symbol of performance and prestige for more than a century."
  3. The Paul Newman Daytona, An Unauthorized History... (International Wristwatch Magazine 8/2003), haettu 19.6.2008 "When I asked Mr. Newman about these theories, he stated that he was unaware of how his name became attached to the watch, and he didn't recall even wearing a Daytona in Winning. Furthermore, he stated that his first Daytona, and the one he currently wears, was given to him by his wife in 1972, the same year he started his professional racing career. It is worth mentioning that the aforementioned watch is not a Paul Newman (exotic dial) model at all, but rather appears to be a Daytona (model 6263), with black dial and white registers."
  4. National Security Archive Electronic Briefing Book No. 5 - The Death of Che Guevara: Declassified (Peter Kornbluh), haettu 19.6.2008 "Rodríguez transmitted the order to execute Guevara from the Bolivian High Command to the soldiers at La Higueras--he also directed them not to shoot Guevara in the face so that his wounds would appear to be combat-related--and personally informed Che that he would be killed. After the execution, Rodríguez took Che's Rolex watch, often proudly showing it to reporters during the ensuing years."
  5. Everest: A Pinnacle of Achievement for Rolex... (International Watch Magazine 4/2004), haettu 19.6.2008 "However, this has also been a source of controversy over the years, with many asking the question, “Which Rolex did they wear?” While it was originally believed that Rolex equipped the expedition with prototypes of the soon to be released Explorer, it is more likely that Rolex simply named its “new” creation in honor of these brave men. In fact, the Rolex worn by Tenzing to the summit wasn’t an Explorer at all, but rather a stainless steel Bubbleback on a simple leather strap given to him by his longtime friend and fellow climber Raymond Lambert and currently on display in Geneva at Rolex headquarters. Hillary, on the other hand (no pun intended), apparently wore a watch from the English company Smiths (A.409 15 jewels. 28mm.), which he endorsed in a series of brief advertisements, as follows: “I carried your watch to the summit. It worked perfectly.”"
  6. Brittons Watches: Rolex - A Brief History, haettu 19.6.2008 "But the best-known Swiss watchmaker has always been something of an outsider in Geneva. Perhaps it's because the company didn't start out Swiss. As mentioned, Rolex was founded in London, in 1905, by the 24-year-old Wilsdorf, a German who became a British citizen after taking an English bride."
  7. Brittons Watches: Rolex - A Brief History, haettu 19.6.2008 "In 1908, before anyone had uttered the term multinational, Wilsdorf trademarked the word Rolex, a name that's easily pronounced in different languages and short enough to fit on a watch dial."
  8. Brittons Watches: Rolex - A Brief History, haettu 19.6.2008 "Rolex didn't leave England until after the First World War, when an import tax hike of 33 percent made receiving its Swiss-made movements prohibitively expensive."
  9. Brittons Watches: Rolex - A Brief History, haettu 19.6.2008 "In 1931 Rolex invented the "Rotor" - a semicircular plate of metal that with gravity, would move freely to wind the watch. Thus, the Rolex "Perpetual" (automatic) movement was born."
