The Black Power movement turns fifty this year. Two new digital exhibitions explore the multiform and ideologically diverse movement that deeply shaped black consciousness and identity and left an immense legacy that continues to inform the contemporary American landscape.

The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense used an assortment of methods, including boycotts, in pursuit of equality and access. This poster was created by Harlem-based BPP members, demanding that public schools "teach [the] HERITAGE and HISTORY" of people of African descent. If these demands were not met, members of the BPP threatened to boycott these institutions.

Black Panther Party rally during the 1960s. All-black attire and completely opaque shades, a leather jacket and the option of rocking a beret or perfectly picked Afro was the outfit of choice for many revolutionaries. A “black power” button was an appropriate finishing touch.

With a focus on racial pride and self‑determination, leaders of the Black Power movement argued that civil rights activism did not go far enough.
