Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011)

This delectable documentary profiles sushi chef Jiro Ono, an 85-year-old master whose 10-seat, $300-a-plate restaurant is legendary among Tokyo foodies. Ono is also a father, whose sons struggle to live up to his legacy and make their own marks.

Praiseworthy Pursuits
Jiro Dreams of Sushi is repetitive in terms of Jiro's excellence, his relationship with his sons and his bite-sized philosophies. While intentional, it makes the pace draggy even over its short running time.
Praiseworthy Pursuits
The music accompanying the choreographed food-preparation is appropriate to a point, but the iterations by Philip Glass in particular start to feel like an obtrusive substitute for editorial momentum.
Praiseworthy Pursuits
Gelb doesn't shoot during business hours and resorts once too often to the food-doc fallback of glossy, slo-mo close-ups, making it look more like a fashion shoot than spontaneous cinéma vérité.
Praiseworthy Pursuits
Despite all the ritual and perfectionism, Jiro Dreams of Sushi is far from humorless. As if speaking for the audience, Juri jokes that a vendor "seems so knowledgeable, I worry he is making it up."
Praiseworthy Pursuits
Tensions between the father and his sons are subtly yet perceptively portrayed, but Jiro's love and pride in his children still shine through even though it's something he'd rather not advertise.
Praiseworthy Pursuits
Gelb's approach reflects the simplicity and minimalism of Jiro's methods, such as the brief running time, the carefully selected music, and the brushstroke characterizations of Jiro's subordinates.

People with a singular purpose are fascinating to me. While enjoying the diversity and uncertainties of a varied life, I will always be inspired by (and in part a little envious of) those who discover a talent for something at an early age and then apply it to forge a narrow path for the rest of their days. Jiro Dreams of Sushi is a beautiful and thoughtful portrait of someone who has done that with the kind of commitment and discipline that can only come from a monomaniacal obsession.
