This year, for Yuletide, I wrote
hold on to the end, which is a thing that kind of climbed out of the cracks of about three other stories, and wanted to be epic. I did a lot of research and crying over this story.
First of all, the personal notes. One of the main reasons I wrote this AU like it was is that in some ways the Inspector Chen series makes me uncomfortable as it stands, with what seems to me to be either a sadly ignorant cant, or the author ignoring the culture of Singapore as a whole to get her desired results.
This is a pretty good post detailing some of the ways that it's maybe not as true as it may look on the surface. (Linked with permission of the author, thanks
tevere.)
My feelings are that in researching the location of Singapore itself, I became increasingly uncomfortable with the disconnect, but I still am incredibly fond of the characters, so when I saw the name on the needy fandoms list, I jumped at it. I'm not sure how much justice I did to it for a number of reasons, including the fact that this really wanted to be like a novel, not a short story, and the fact that I had to do so much research to get to the level of accuracy even close, and I think I still fell short of that. But.
Underneath the cut is some more meta stuff, based on what I found out in the process of writing this, and some stuff on two of the books I liked. I spent pretty much the entire month in a constant low level of "look into stuff", including finding the folktale of Kucinita from a book of Malay folktales, which is
here, because I couldn't find the complete version on the internet anywhere, and as a folktale, I thought it was pretty awesome.
(Also, now all the credits for who helped are properly cited. Way to be, self.)
( Read more... )I may seriously have to write more of this, because I have so many story ideas and building that I'd love to do here. Two enough are short enough that I will probably do them, and we'll see about the big ones.
