Ŝi komencis aktoradi, por financi sian studadon en la universitato de Novjorko. En 1981 ŝi havis sian unuan filmrolon kaj de 1982 ĝis 1984 ŝi aperis en la televidserio As the World Turns. La reĝisoroj aparte ŝatis ŝian kapablon, plori je komando.
Famon ŝi atingis per filmoj kiel Top Gun (1986) kaj When Harry Met Sally (1989). Kune kun Tom Hanks ŝi agis en Sleepless en Seattle kaj You've Got Mail.
