[edit]From Middle High German wüelen, from Old High German wuolen, from Proto-Germanic *wōlijaną (“to ruin, destroy”), related to *wallaną (“to well up”). Cognate with Luxembourgish wullen, Vilamovian wiła, Dutch woelen.
