Happy Easter

  1. An expression used during Easter to wish someone a happy time.

Usage notes

[edit]

In most traditionally Christian countries, there is a ritual religious greeting, called a Paschal greeting, that is commonly heard at Easter: some variation of "Christ is risen!", to which one responds "Truly, He is risen". In English, this is rarely used as a greeting by strangers outside of a church setting. "Happy Easter!" is a more secular, less religiously loaded greeting, and is used much more commonly in English-speaking countries. Many Eastern European languages do not have an equivalent to "Happy Easter!", and the paschal greeting is used instead.
