Particularly: “Could it be that this word was borrowed from (gǒu, dog)? The loanword couldn't replace the dominant native word (in this case, chó) and so was assigned to a similar animal. See also the case of borrowed hồng (pink), from (red), vs. native đỏ. However, it seems that foxes were more often associated with weasels instead of dogs.”
