A language based upon smell
[edit]We have speech (verbal and auditory), writing (sighted), braille (touch), sign language (physical); yet there is one sense we're all forgetting—smell! As such, the administration at Wiktionary has decided to officially launch the Wiktionary Olfaction-Language Project tasked with creating the first-ever language based upon the human olfactory interpretation of airborne molecules of odour!
Olfaction-Language
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Chosen to represent a greeting due its near-universal recognisability, distinctiveness, pleasantness and aromaticness.
Odour description
[edit]The odour of gasoline (petrol).
Production
[edit]The principal chemical in gasoline is benzene (corresponding to the amount of “7” in the Wiktionary Olfaction-Language Project notation), which is very similar to the odour of gasoline itself; toluene, similarly pungent and aromatic to benzene, smells like paint thinner and certain types of glue. The combination (consisting of an amount of “4”) with benzene increases the odour of gasoline's intensity, while a small hint of xylene (“1”) slightly increases the fragrancy and sweetness.
In Wiktionary Olfaction-Language Project notation, it is displayed as follows:
- Benzene(form1)7-Toluene(form1)4-Xylene(form1)1
“Form 1” indicates that it is the most common smell of said substance, as various types of substances with differing odours may exist.
Interjection
[edit]Benzene(form1)7-Toluene(form1)4-Xylene(form1)1 HELLO

[edit]When the 'Used other than figuratively or idiomatically' is a little too absurd...
[edit]English
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Attributed to 20th-century American mobster Al Capone.
Proverb
[edit]you get more with a kind word and a gun than you do with a kind word alone
- It is advantageous not to rely solely on being nice to others.
- Used other than figuratively or idiomatically: see you, get, more, with, a, kind, word, and, a, gun, than, you, do, with, a, kind, word, alone.
- 2024 May 27, Ahmed Khalid, Savannah T. Bothma, “Review: Elder's Bartering IX — A Game that Redefines Strategy, Imagination and Pure Lunacy”, in Gamer's Corner[2], Evilgamepub:
- In Elder's Bartering IX – The Recession [video game] you can collect and sell various objects and hypothetical concepts for Goldings, the in-game currency. Items include flower petals, guns, eggs, umbrellas [...] and hypothetical concepts, such as justice, integrity, revenge, well-wishes and even kind words. Some items are, of corse[sic], worth more than others; not only that, but there are item pairs which the player can discover that will increase the total amount of Goldings that the individual items would be worth when sold separately. Obviously you get more with a kind word and a gun than you do with a kind word alone, but most players will not realise that selling revenge and flower petals together will award the player with 67 Goldings while the petals alone are worth 3 Goldings and revenge worth just 52 Goldings.
