Proto-Japonic/Proto-Ryukyuan cognates

[edit]

Amply attested around Ryukyuan. These Ryukyuan terms apparently mean "mosquito":

  • Northern Ryukyuan:
    • Kikai: 蝤蛑 (gajami) (Aden)
    • Kunigami: 蝤蛑 (gajāmi) (Nakijin)
    • Northern Amami Ōshima: 蝤蛑 (ga-) (Yamatohama)
    • Okinawan: 蝤蛑 (gajan) (Shuri)
    • Okinoerabu: 蝤蛑 (gajamū) (Kamihira-kawa)
    • Southern Amami Ōshima: 蝤蛑 (gajam) (Koniya)
    • Tokunoshima: 蝤蛑 (gajan) (unknown; from JLect)
    • Yoron: 蝤蛑 (gadyan) (Central; Mugiya?)
  • Southern Ryukyuan:
    • Miyako: 蝤蛑 (gazam) (Hirara)
    • Yaeyama: 蝤蛑 (gazami) (Central; unknown; from Nevisky)
    • Yonaguni: 蝤蛑 (kadanku) (Central; Sonai)

@Kwékwlos: The Proto-Japonic form would be *ka but what is Proto-Ryukyuan reflex of all of these cognates?

And why are animals in the Ryukyuan languages always getting intial voiced consonants (e.g. *kudira (whale) and *karasu (crow), where initial vowel is reconstructed unvoiced); even stuff like PR *take (bamboo)?

P.S. I forgot to check JLect and it's apparently related to 蝤蛑 (gazami, swimming crab), whose variant gazame is attested since 934. But its etymology is unknown. But there's unvoiced kasame, kazame, kasami, kazami; so what is proto-form for kazami, kazame? Anything?

Now, (Notifying Eirikr, TAKASUGI Shinji, Atitarev, Fish bowl, Poketalker, Cnilep, Marlin Setia1, Huhu9001, 荒巻モロゾフ, 片割れ靴下, Onionbar, Shen233, Alves9, Cpt.Guapo, Sartma, Lugria, LittleWhole): This is for investigation. Chuterix (talk) 16:33, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
