Etymology

By surface analysis, *dojь +‎ *-iti, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)-. Cognate with Latvian dêt (to suck), Sanskrit धयति (dháyati, to suck), Latin fellō (to suck), Gothic 𐌳𐌰𐌳𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (daddjan, to breastfeed).
