Etymology
[edit]Extracted from two paragraphs in Zuo Zhuan:
- 慶鄭曰:「背施無親,幸災不仁,貪愛不祥,怒鄰不義。四德皆失,何以守國?」 [Classical Chinese, trad.]
- From: Commentary of Zuo, c. 4th century BCE
- Qìngzhèng yuē: “Bèi shī wú qīn, xìng zāi bù rén, tān ài bù xiáng, nù lín bù yì. Sì dé jiē shī, héyǐ shǒu guó?” [Pinyin]
- Qing Zheng said, "If you betrayed to other's mercy, you have no family. If you enjoy other's disaster, you have no kindness. If you love only money, you have no fortune. If you anger your neighbours, you have no righteousness. You have already lost these four kinds of virtues. How can you protect the country?"

- After the Earl of Zheng heard that, he met Guo Shu, and said to him, "I have heard that when the dirge is not performed at the right timing, disasters would come. Now the prince is enjoying singing and dancing performances, that means he is enjoying the disaster."
