Glyph origin

[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *sraŋ) : semantic (woman) + phonetic (OC *sraŋ).

Etymology

[edit]

Zhang (2000) relates it to (OC *smaːŋ, “mourning; funeral”), (OC *smaːŋs, “to lose”) and (OC *sraŋ, “frost (which causes loss)”). However, Schuessler (2007) considers these three words etymologically unrelated.
